Financial Documentation for I-20 Purposes

In order to be issued an I-20 form, you are required to show financial support for at least one year of study in the amount of $34,500 for an Associate’s Degree and $40,000 for a Bachelor’s degree.

The total support necessary for the first year of study must be documented and available. The support necessary for subsequent years of study must be reasonably attainable and documented through bank statements, employment letters, tax returns, investments, property income, etc. Employment/salary letters and investments are the most reliable sources of support. If any funds are provided by a sponsor, please be sure they fully complete Section B of the Verification portion on the Foreign Student Financial Statement. If personal funds are being used, bank statements must be attached in the student’s name and be sufficient for all years of study, not just the first year.
