First Time Freshman
First-time Freshmen are those students who have not attended a post-secondary College or University. These students are required to have earned a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher (US Grade Scale) as well as meet the college’s English Proficiency Requirements to be admitted to SUNY Canton.
Transfers are those students who have attended a post-secondary College or University. These students are required to have earned a cumulative college grade point average of a 2.0 or higher (US Grade Scale) as well as meet the college’s English Proficiency Requirements to be admitted to SUNY Canton.
English Proficiency Requirements
For those students who English is NOT their first language, an English Proficiency Exam must be completed in order to be admitted to SUNY Canton. Students must submit demonstration of English Proficiency in one of the following five ways:
- TOEFL (School Code 2523)
- 61 Internet Based Test
- 500 Paper Based Test
- 173 Computer Based Test
- 6.0 Minimum
- 5.5 minimum in each sub-section of exam
- 3.5 Minimum
- PTE Academic
- 44 Minimum
- College Level English Course
- Must receive a grade of “C” or better (US Grade)
For those students who meet the grade point average requirement but do NOT meet the English Proficiency Requirement, Conditional Admission will be offered by SUNY Canton. Students who choose to accept Conditional Admission will enroll in an English as Second Language (ESL) program at our partner school, Fulton-Montgomery Community College (FMCC) for a period of one-two semesters, depending on initial assessment at FMCC.
Once the student successfully completes the ESL program at FMCC, they will then be guaranteed admission at SUNY Canton. For more information, please contact the International Admissions Coordinator, Julia Morse at firstname.lastname@example.org.
