In 2006, SUNY Canton received $18 million to construct an ice rink and convocation center. The scope of the initial project changed dramatically because of a need for a new athletic facility.
The new project is estimated to exceed $40 million, and will include a field house with a regulation hard court that will be used by the SUNY Canton basketball and volleyball teams. The rest of the field house will have a synthetic surface that can be used by other SUNY Canton sports teams, students and community members.
The new facility will have a new ice arena along with locker rooms for both SUNY Canton teams and visiting teams, a press box and ample seating for spectators.
The new facility will have a brand new fitness center with all state-of-the-art equipment. There will also be a lap pool adjacent to to the fitness center availble to the SUNY Canton and outside community.
There will be locker rooms for both indoor and outdoor sports as well as a new athletic training facility.
In addition there will be office space for all athletic personnel, classroom space and study areas for student-athletes.
SUNY Canton has already begun planning and design phases of the construction project utilizing M/E Engineering of Plattsburgh and Architectural Resources of Buffalo, for site sampling, surveying, and blueprints.
