MSU-Bottineau Celebrates With Their National Championship Trophy
March 2, 2008
MSU-Bottineau Blasts Monroe CC 6-1 To Repeat As National Champions
(Canton, N.Y.)- No.2 MSU-Bottineau traveled over 3,000 miles this
week to compete in the 2008 NJCAA Men's Ice Hockey National Championship.
It was worth every mile for the Lumberjacks from North Dakota as they
repeated as national champions blasting top-seeded Monroe Community
College 6-1 in the title game Sunday afternoon at the Canton Pavilion
in Canton, N.Y.
MSU-Bottineau (20-9-2), who drove out to Canton earlier this week, beat the Tribunes (19-5-2) for the second time in as many years to capture the title and did it in impressive fashion. The Lumberjacks allowed just two goals in two games and after out shooting Monroe 49-29 on Sunday held a 94-60 advantage in shots in the tournament.
MSU-Bottineau scored twice in the opening 10 minutes of the game to take a 2-0 lead. That gap would stretch to 3-0 with another goal midway through the second period.
Monroe seemed to get a spark when they scored their first goal with 1:02 left in the second period but the Tribunes scored three more times in the final period and held Monroe to nine shots on goal while generating 16 of their own to capture the title.
Tyson Friesen (Altona, Manitoba), named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, Steven Burdick (West Fargo, N.D.) and Eric Schultz (Strasbourgh, Saskatchewan) each had a goal and an assist for MSU-Bottineau. Mitch Jore (West Fargo, N.D.), Brad Benke (Grand Forks, N.D.) and Nic Soderberg (Malmo, Sweden) also scored and Cody Didychuck (Petersfield, Manitoba) stopped 28 of 29 shots in goal.
Tom Pappa (Oswego, N.Y.) scored for Monroe and Danny Kuntz (Rochester, N.Y.) had 43 saves.
Friesen was joined on the all-tournament team by SUNY Canton's Scott
Zaryski, North Country Community College's Clarence Bell, Papa and Andy
Orsini of Monroe, and Didychuk and Jamie Schultz of MSU-Bottineau. The
Lumberjacks Travis Rybchinski was named the Coach of the Tournament.
