(Canton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton athletic department has announced
that several construction projects are now underway on campus and that
mens lacrosse will be de-activated for the immediate future.
Construction has begun on a new all-weather, lighted synthetic turf field, which will be used by the mens and womens soccer teams this fall, as well as a new on-campus baseball field. The turf field will be installed where the football field was and the baseball field will be where the old soccer fields were. Fiacco & Riley Construction of Norwood is overseeing the projects. Renovations have also begun on the cross country trails with the recent addition of mens and womens cross country, which will begin competition this fall.
SUNY Canton recently joined the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and will begin competing in four-year athletics this fall. The NAIA currently does not offer mens lacrosse as an intercollegiate sport.
There are currently no viable four-year league options available for us to join, said Assistant Athletic Director Matthew G. Metcalf. We are hopeful that other NAIA schools will join us in creating a new lacrosse league in the future.
Several schools in the NAIA and the Sunrise Conference have voiced an
interest in starting mens lacrosse . There needs to be a minimum
25 schools nationwide that offer lacrosse in order to be recognized
by the NAIA.
