Small logo(Lake Placid, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton men's ice hockey team kicked off their season Wednesday night with a 5-2 loss to the National Sports Academy in Lake Placid.

NSA scored three first-period goals to spoil first year head coach Eric McCambly's debut as the Roos coach.

SUNY Canton trimmed NSA's lead to 3-1 when freshman Pat Otwell (Orchard Park, N.Y.) scored the first of his two goals at 16:31 of the second period. Freshman Garrett Rosenbaum (Charleston, S.C.) and freshman Mark Stewart (Gansevoort, N.Y.) picked up assists.

Otwell's second goal came 38 seconds into the third period with assists to freshman Nick Montour (Akwesasne, N.Y.) and sophomore Kevin O'Connell (Cadyville, N.Y.).

Freshman Brandon Mahler (Malone, N.Y.) made his first collegiate start in goal and responded with 30 saves.

Geoff Matzell, Manuel Escandon, Michael Segouin, RJ Pressier, and Jose Canseco scored for NSA and Andrew Cullen had 20 saves.
