The Roos celebrate their championship win on Sunday at the Canton Pavilion
Roos Beat New England in in Overtime in Championship
of Terry Martin / Pride's Corner Tournament
(Canton, N.Y.)- Dan Don (Gouverneur, N.Y.) scored with one second left in overtime helping SUNY Canton beat the University of New England 5-4 to win the 1st Annual Terry Martin / SUNY Canton Pride's Corner Tournament at the Canton Pavilion on Sunday. Don was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament following his second goal of the game.
With under 10 seconds left in overtime, Don gathered the puck just inside the blue line along the right wing. deked four players, skated into the slot and after showing incredible patience wristed a high shot over the glove of Nor'easters goalie Brian MacLure setting off a frenzied celebration by the Roos. SUNY Canton (12-5) beat Daniel Webster College 6-1 Friday night and have won seven straight games heading into Thanksgiving break.
New England had jumped ahead 3-0 up to the 2:13 mark of the second period before the Roos mounted a furious comeback. Darren Camp (Canton, N.Y.) scored at the 6:50 mark to cut the lead to two. Don then scored short-handed at the 7:43 mark to make it a one-goal game. Dons initial shot was blocked by MacLure but the junior was able to reach back and stuff the puck in the net. Mark Talamo (Oswego, N.Y.) tied the game for the Roos at the 12:59 mark on a quick, hard wrist shot from the right wing. SUNY Canton then took their first lead of the day at the 13:56 mark when Mike Pearman (Columbus, Ind.) scored from Adam Levy (Penfield, N.Y.). New England tied the game with 4:31 left in the third period off a goal from Channing Tobey.
Dustin Deleel (Massena, N.Y.) had 31 saves in goal for the Roos.
Nate Frechette, Tim Margiotta, and Billy Davis also scored for the Nor'easters and MacLure finished with 30 saves.
Don (below with head coach Eric McCambly and athletic director Diane Para) was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Adam Levy (Penfield, N.Y.) and Garrett Rosenbaum, New England's Jack Nolin and Kyle MacLennan, Sean Zelachowski of Penn State-Berks and Eric Burgess of Daniel Webster College. Penn State beat Daniel Webster 9-0 in the consolation game. Levy had four assists in two games and Rosenbaum had a goal and three assists.
