Roos Shoot Past Villanova For 16th Straight Win
1/31/09
(Canton, N.Y.)- It's 16 and counting for the SUNY Canton men's ice hockey team as they won their 16th straight game on Saturday with a thrilling shootout victory over Villanova University at the Canton Pavilion. The Roos moved to 20-5 overall after completing the weekend sweep of the Wildcats.
After both teams skated to a 4-4 tie in regulation and no winner in overtime, the game, per American Collegiate Hockey Association rules, went to a shootout to determine the winner. Three players attempt shots in the first round and if the score is still tied the shootout goes to sudden death.
The Wildcats went first in the shootout and Roos goalie Jimmy Merrow (Plainsboro, N.Y.), who had 25 saves in regulation and overtime, promptly stuffed Villanova's Joona Karlsson. Pat Otwell (Orchard Park, N.Y.) then scored on a hard wrist shot for the Roos for a 1-0 lead. Rob Godzinski tied the score on the Wildcats next attempt. The Roos went back ahead when Adam Levy (Penfield, N.Y.) tucked home a nifty shot after several good fakes on Wildcats goalie James Carrig. Jon Haar then evened the score again slipping a shot past Merrow.
Mark Talamo (Oswego, N.Y.) misfired on the Roos final shot in the first round sending the shootout into sudden death.
Merrow came up with another save on the Wildcats first attempt by Gregory Dyer. Joel Cardinal-Shultz (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) then missed for the Roos on their first try as Carrig came up with the save. Merrow then made another nice stop kicking the puck away from Villanova's Lee Zoeller.
Next up for the Roos was Dan Don (Gouverneur, N.Y.) who then recorded his second dramatic game-winning goal of the season beating Carrig to keep the Roos winning steak alive. Don scored the overtime goal with one second left back in November that beat the University of New England for the Terry Martin / SUNY Canton Pride's Corner championship at the Canton Pavilion.
Darren Camp (Canton, N.Y.), Rob Liggio (Canton, N.Y.), Mike Pearman (Columbus, Ind.) and Levy scored in regulation for the Roos. Pearman and Don also had assists in the game.
Haar scored twice in regulation for Villanova on Saturday. Godzinski also scored and Carrig finished with 39 saves.
