Van Sciver Lifts Roos to 20th Straight Win With 1-0 Shootout Victory over Rochester

(Canton, N.Y.)-Rick Van Sciver (Turnerville, N.J.) made a sliding, outstretched kick save on Rochester's final shooter to lift the SUNY Canton men's ice hockey team to a 1-0 shootout win over the Yellowjackets for their remarkable 20th straight win Saturday night. The Roos end the regular season at 10-2 in the Eastern Collegiate Hockey League and 24-5 overall.
SUNY Canton will be the No. 2 seed in next weekend's ECHL tournament in Rochester. The Roos received a first-round bye and will play their first game on Friday, Feb. 21 at the Genesee Valley Sports Complex Ice Skating Rink. The opening round games are on Thursday and the championship game slated for Saturday.
This was the second shootout win for the Roos this year and again they did it in dramatic fashion. Van Sciver, who had 14 saves, stuffed Rochester's first shooter, John Attanasioa and then Yellowjackets goalie Mark Ingram returned the favor on SUNY Canton's Pat Otwell (Orchard Park, N.Y.). Van Sciver then came up with another save, this time stopping Josh Anderson with a pad save. Adam Levy went next for the Roos and after several good fakes slid a shot past Ingram for a 1-0 lead. It was Levy's second shootout goal this year. Rochester's final effort of the first round came down to Mike Collins and his low shot was kicked away by Van Sciver setting off a wild celebration by the Roos.
SUNY Canton scored two goals in the first period to take a 2-0 lead. Levy scored at the 4:18 mark and Mike Pearman (Columbus, Ind.) scored at the 12:11 mark. The Yellowjackets bounced back and knocked in two goals before the period ended to knot the game at 2-2. Colby Lennon scored at the 14:05 mark and then Tom Bauer scored with 2:10 left in the period.
SUNY Canton out shot Rochester 26-10 over the second and third periods and the overtime session but could not solve the stellar play of Ingram who finished with 38 saves.
