Roos 2nd Seed in ECHL Tournament

(Canton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton men's ice hockey team will take a 20-game winning streak into this weekend's Eastern Collegiate Hockey League tournament in Rochester, N.Y. The tournament will be held at the Genesee Valley Ice Sports Complex Ice Skating Rink.
The Roos are currently 24-5 in their first year as members of the American Collegiate Hockey Association and their winning streak dates back to the end of October.
SUNY Canton finished second in the league with 20 points, four behind league-leaders Robert Morris who handed the Roos their only two league losses this season. The Roos and Robert Morris, ranked eighth in the country, each received first-round byes and will play Friday night. SUNY Canton plays at 5 p.m. against No. 3 Mercyhurst who beat No. 6 Niagara 4-0 on Thursday. Robert Morris plays at 7:30 p.m. against No. 4 Buffalo who beat No. No. 5 Syracuse 3-1 in the first round. The championship game is slated for Saturday at 5 p.m.
The Roos are outscoring opponents 4.6 to 2.8 and have 13 players that have reached double-figures in scoring, eight with at least 20 points.
Freshman Darren Camp (Canton, N.Y.) (above) leads the Roos with a team-high 16 goals and 26 points. Six of Camp's goals have come on the power play and three have been short-handed.
Senior Adam Levy (Penfield, N.Y.) has recorded a team-high 16 assists and 25 points. Freshman Joel Cardinal-Shultz (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) has 15 goals and 24 points. Junior Mark Talamo (Oswego, N.Y.) has registered nine goals and 24 points and is tied for the lead among ACHA Division I players with five game-winning goals. Sophomore Pat Otwell (Orchard Park, N.Y.) (13-9), sophomore Garrett Rosenbaum (Charleston, S.C.) (8-14) and freshman Dan Cibelli (Liverpool, N.Y.) (7-15) each have scored 22 points and junior Mike Pearman (Columbus, Ind.) has seven goals and 20 points.
Sophomore Jimmy Merrow (Plainsboro, N.Y.) has logged a team-leading 928 minutes in goal and is 13-2 with a 2.84 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage. Freshman Chris Lee (Gansevoort, N.Y.) has played in four games and has a 2.77 goals-against average and a .867 save percentage and freshman Rick Van Sciver (Turnerville, N.J.) saw his first action last weekend and made 14 savesin a shootout win over Rochester. Three of Van Sciver's saves came in the shootout.
Even if SUNY Canton wins the ECHL tournament this weekend they cannot move on to the ACHA National Tournament because first-year ACHA programs are not eligible for the national tournament.
