(Canton, N.Y.)- Kyle Laurie (Canton, N.Y.), scored three
goals and had one assist, Rick Simone
(Baldwinsville, N.Y.) scored twice and Dustin Deleel (Massena,
N.Y.) made 17 saves leading the SUNY Canton men’s ice hockey team to a
season-opening 8-3 win over the St. Lawrence University club team
Wednesday night in Canton.
The Northstars (1-0) were playing their first game in the Canton
Pavilion in over a year after the rink closed last season for repairs
to the floor.
The Saints jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 2:52 of the first period when
Wyot Woods tucked a low shot past Deleel. SUNY Canton tied the
game four minutes later on a power play goal from Laurie, who was the
team’s third leading scorer last year. Laurie scored another
power play goal two minutes later and following a goal from Austin
Chase (Newport Beach, Calif.) completed the hat trick with just over
one minute remaining and SUNY
Canton led 4-2 after one period.
The Northstars scored three more times in the second period, including
two from Simone and one from Maik Tatavosian (Irvine, Calif.), and then
Andrew Rak scored 14 seconds into the third period unassisted for the
final score.
Chase also had an assist for SUNY Canton and Nick Emmick (Richford, N.Y.) and Kyle Gadway (Champlain, N.Y.) had two assists each.
David Rile and Lance Branch also scored for St. Lawrence and Walter
Scherer stopped 34 shots in goal.
