(Canton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton men's ice hockey team lost
to Erie Community College 8-7 in overtime Saturday afternoon at the
Canton Pavilion. The Northstars dropped to 10-9-3 overall and
4-5-2 in Region III while the Kats improved to 11-8-2 and 2-7-1 in the
region.
Jim Miller scored his second goal of the game off a pass from Steve Latona with 1:27 left in overtime for the game-winner.
The high scoring contest featured six ties, six lead changes and six special teams goals, including three short-handed tallies by SUNY Canton. Ian Vanier (Malone, N.Y.), Adam Levy (Penfield, N.Y.) and Matt Bailey (Parishville, N.Y.) each scored a short-handed goal on Saturday.
As they've done often this year, the Northstars jumped out to an early lead when Vanier scored his first of two goals off a won face-off from Jeremy Kolb (Rush, N.Y.) 1:50 into the game. Maik Tatavosian (Irvine, Calif.) then made it 2-0 four minutes later scoring from Levy and Austin Chase (Newport Beach, Calif.).
Erie then scored two straight goals and both teams traded goals late in the period as the score was deadlocked 3-3 after one period.
Erie twice took the lead in the second period. Bailey then tied it at 5-5 with a power play goal at the 11:57 mark and Levy gave the Northstars a 6-5 lead heading into the final period with his short-handed goal at the 17:21 mark.
The Kats scored two more goals in the third period sandwiched around Bailey's second of the game, including one from Wade Gault with 7:59 remaining that sent the game into overtime. In the extra session Erie generated four shots and SUNY Canton just one.
Spencer Utman (Brockville, N.Y.) started in goal for the Northstars and stopped 13 of 16 shots over the first 15 minutes of the first period before being replaced by Dustin Deleel (Massena, N.Y.), who finished with 24 saves the rest of the game.
Latona finished with a goal and three assists. Gault scored
twice, Jeremy Lang had four assists and Ben Sawicki recorded 35 saves
for the Kats.
