(Canton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton men's ice hockey team lost
their second straight overtime game on Sunday as they fell to Monroe
Community College 5-4 at the Canton Pavilion.
The Northstars (10-10-3 overall, 4-6-2 Region III) led 3-1 heading
into the third period on goals from Matt Battaglini (Endicott, N.Y.),
Kyle Laurie (Canton, N.Y.), and Nick Emmick (Richford, N.Y. ).
The Tribunes tied the game in the third period on goals from Todd Maier at the 12:15 mark and Chad Merkel at the 14:18 mark.
With 1:26 left in regulation, the Northstars thought they had the game won when Emmick scored his second of the day, this one short-handed, from Matt Bailey (Parishville, N.Y.) and Anthony Gruppo (Williamsville, N.Y.).
But Monroe came back again and just as the horn sounded Pat Kieffer was able to knock the puck in the net and send the game into overtime. Then with 13 seconds left in the extra session, the Tribunes took advantage of a Northstars turnover in their own end and Josh Soechtig scored to win the game.
Emmick and Laurie each added an assist. Gruppo and Bailey each had two assists and Dustin Deleel (Massena, N.Y.) had 32 saves in goal.
Kieffer finished with two goals and two assists. Maier added
two assists and Andrew Choma recorded 35 saves.
