Roos Sweep St. Joseph 17-16 and 20-10
(Ogdensburg, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton baseball team notched their first win of the year with a wild 17-16 win over the College of St. Joseph Saturday in Ogdensburg.The Roos (2-4 Sunrise Conference, 2-8 overall) beat the Fighting Saints 20-10 in the nightcap for the sweep.
The first game went 10 innings, lasted nearly four hours and each team pounded out 15 hits. St. Joseph went ahead 16-15 in the top of the 10th and then the Roos tied the game on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning and then won the game on an RBI single from Pete Collins (Cobleskill, N.Y.).
Jacques DeMars (Vermontville, N.Y.) blasted his first of two home runs on the day in the opener finishing 3-for-7 with three RBIs and three runs. Keith Shults (Canajoharie, N.Y.) went 3-for-4 with two doubles, three runs and two RBIs. Brandon Mahler (Malone, N.Y.) had two hits and two RBIs.
Steven Wozniak (Redwood, N.Y.) pitched the first 3 1/3 innings and struck out four with three walks. Lucky McFadden (Cortland Manor, N.Y.) went 1 2/3 with three strikeouts and three walks. Shults notched 4 1/3 innings and fanned six batters and Matt Holcomb (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) pitched the final 2/3 innings and had one strikeout and one walk.
Sean Hamel went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, three runs and two RBIs for the Fighting Saints in game one. Chad Wilson was 2-for-6 with a double and two runs.
In the nightcap Demars again went deep and added a double and five RBIs. Collins was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs and Holcomb finished 2-for-4 with three runs and an RBI.
Jason Barringer (Wallkill, N.Y.) allowed three hits and three walks with two strikeouts in two innings for the Roos. Jeff Laduca (Syracuse, N.Y.) went 3 1/3 and struck out three batters while giving up four walks and two hits. Dylan Gronowski (Buffalo, N.Y.) pitched 2/3 of an inning and had two walks and one hit.
Garrett Brewer led St. Joseph with a double, a single and an RBI. Hamel went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Chadd Viger, Ian Zajac and Andrew McMahon combined on the mound to allow 15 hits and eight walks with two strikeouts.
