Roos Sweep Vermont Tech 4-3 and 13-6
(Potsdam, N.Y.)- Keith Shults (Canajoharie, N.Y.) stroked a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning and Anthony Brauchle (Clay, N.Y.) tossed a complete game lifting the SUNY Canton men's baseball team past Vermont Technical College 4-3 in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Clarkson University. The Roos (6-6 Sunrise Conference, 6-10 overall) banged out 11 hits in game two and picked up the sweep with a 13-6 win.
With the score tied 3-3 and one out in the seventh, Jacques DeMars (Vermontville, N.Y.) reached base on a error and advanced to second on a Pete Collins (Cobleskill, N.Y.) single setting up Shults game-winning hit.
The Green Knights had rallied to tie the game in the top of the seventh when Greg Butler scored off a Roos error after leading off the inning with a walk. Vermont Tech then threatened to take the lead when Blake Wright ripped a two-out single to center field. Joseph Clough attempted to score but was gunned out at home by DeMars on a terrific throw from center field.
Brauchle (above) scattered six hits and struck out four batters with three walks in seven strong innings for the Roos. DeMars, Collins, Shults and Brandon Mahler (Malone, N.Y.) all had two hits for SUNY Canton.
Jeff Savage took the loss for the Green Knights as he allowed eight hits and two walks with three strikeouts in seven innings. Savage was also 2-for-4 with a run at the plate.
In game two Shults had three singles, three runs and three RBIs to lead the Roos. Shults also pitched two innings and had two strikeouts. DeMars added two more hits in the nightcap. Sean Swinegar (Schenectady, N.Y.) collected three RBIs. Andrew Rupert (Massena, N.Y.) had two RBIs and Mahler finished 1-for-3 with a run.
Lucky McFadden (Cortland Manor, N.Y.) pitched the first 1 2/3 innings and allowed two hits and one walk. Kyle Kearney (Fayetteville, N.Y.) pitched the next 3 1/3 innings and allowed three hits with two strikeouts before giving way to Shults.
Calvin Russell struck out four and walked five batters for the Green
Knights. Butler was 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Savage was also 1-for-4.
