Brandon Mahler connects on the first of two inside the park home runs against Vermont Tech
Roos Eliminated In Sunrise Conference / Region X Tournament
With 7-5 loss To Vermont Tech
(Haverhill, Mass.)-SUNY Canton was eliminated from the Sunrise Conference / Region X baseball tournament on Thursday with a 7-5 loss to Vermont Technical College. The Green Knights advance to the championship game Thursday night against Fisher College. The Roos, who had beat Vermont Tech 11-3 in the opening round of the double elimination tournament, end their season at 7-12.
Brandon Mahler (Malone, N.Y.) put the Roos ahead 2-1 with a pair of inside the park home runs. Mahler connected for his first one down the left field line in the third inning and then hit his second one in almost the identical spot in the fifth inning.
Vermont Tech tied the game in the sixth and then put up four runs in the eighth inning thanks in part to a pair of Roos errors to take a 6-2 lead.
SUNY Canton got one run back in the eighth when Jacques DeMars (Vermontville, N.Y.) scored after reaching base on an error to trim the lead to 6-3. The Green Knights stretched the lead back to four at 7-3 with a run in the top of the ninth.
The Roos loaded the bases in the bottom half of the ninth but could only muster two runs as Vermont Tech pitcher Blake Wright pitched out of the jam to secure the win.
Jeff LaDuca (Syracuse, N.Y.) pitched eight solid innings for SUNY Canton allowing six hits and four walks with five strikeouts. Jason Barringer (Walkill, N.Y.) pitched the ninth inning and gave up three hits with one strikeout.
DeMars also had a triple and Pete Collins (Cobleskill, N.Y.) and Tom Coles (Norwich, N.Y.) each added a single.
Wright struck out five batters and scattered six hits over nine innings and helped his cause with two singles and two runs. Joseph Clough went 4-for-5 with two doubles and a run and Jeff Savage went 2-for-5 with two runs.
