Baseballl Announces Team Awards
(Canton, N.Y.)- The men's baseball team announced their 2009 team awards at the athletic department's year-end picnic on May 9.
Senior centerfielder Jacques DeMars (Vermontville, N.Y.) was named both Most Valuable Player and Most Valuable Offensive Player. The business administration major led the Roos in hitting (.400), slugging percentage (.600), RBIs (23), triples (3) and home runs (1). DeMars, who was named to the all-Sunrise Conference team and received a conference Gold Glove Award, also scored 13 runs and stole eight bases.almon started all 20 games this year and had three assists. In addition he was also recognized as one of the first four-year athletes in SUNY Canton history joining Alicia Abbey and Kristi Farrell (basketball), Dennis Salmon (soccer), and Vanessa Badlam (soccer). DeMars has been one of the top hitters for the Roos over his four years. He leaves with a career batting average of .366. He has recorded 49 RBIs, smacked 11 doubles, eight triples, and five home runs and has scored 52 runs. In centerfield DeMars has committed just four errors in 146 attempts for a career fielding percentage of .972.
The Most Valuable Defensive Player went to junior shortstop and pitcher Adam Blair (Perth, Ontario). Blair, who also received a conference Gold Glove Award, recorded a .912 fielding percentage. He led the team in stolen bases (15) and batted .352 with 15 runs, eight RBIs, and three doubles.
The Most Improved Player was sophomore second baseman Nate Besaw (Massena, N.Y.). The business administration major batted .333 with 15 runs, seven RBIs amd three doubles. Besaw had 11 stolen bases and a .879 fielding percentage.
The Most Outstanding Pitcher was Justin Storie (Hammond, N.Y.). Storie registered a team-high 31 strikeouts in 28 2/3 innings of work and joined DeMars and Blair with a Gold Glove Award.
