Small logo Roos Drop Twin Bill to Presque Isle 7-6, 10-6 in Season Opener

(Staten Island, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton baseball team opened their season on Saturday against the University of Maine at Presque Isle at Staten Island College. The Roos played well but dropped the Sunrise Conference twin bill to the Owls losing 7-6 and 10-6.

In the opening game Presque Isle scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally back from a 6-3 deficit. The Roos had put up four runs in the fourth inning to take the lead.

Junior Adam Blair (Perth, Ontario) pitched 6 1/3 strong innings for the Roos as he gave up all seven runs but only three were earned. The junior college transfer scattered six hits and struck out four batters with four walks. Freshman Justin Storie (Hammond, N.Y.) came on in relief and allowed two walks in the seventh inning.

Sophomore Nate Besaw (Massena, N.Y.) and freshman Ramsey Locke (Canton, N.Y.) each drove in two runs to lead the Roos offensively.

Caleb Hale tossed a complete game for the Owls as the freshman fanned five batters and allowed five hits and six walks in seven innings. Tyson Tash smacked two hits with a run and an RBI and Corey Fournier went 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

In the nightcap Storie went five innings and surrendered 10 hits and four walks with five strikeouts. Sophomore Jeff LaDuca (Syracuse, N.Y.) pitched one inning and had two strikeouts.

Senior Jacques Demars (Vermontville, N.Y.), the Roos top hitter last year, led the Roos at the plate going 2-for-4 with a triple, three RBIs and a run. Senior Zeuxi De La Cruz (Bronx, N.Y.), playing near his hometown in the Bronx, added two hits and an RBI for SUNY Canton.

Brandon Boulware and Clint Carter combined for the win on the mound. The two allowed seven hits and seven walks with four strikeouts in seven innings. Corey Harding and Brandon Elie each had three hits, two runs and an RBI for the Owls.
The two teams will square off again on Sunday in another double header in Staten Island beginning at 3 p.m.
