Roos Hold Off Paul Smith's 90-84 in Overtime

(Potsdam, N.Y.)- Junior Silvon John (Bronx, N.Y.) put on another dominating rebounding performance Tuesday night leading SUNY Canton past Paul Smith's College 90-84 in overtime at Clarkson University. It was the first win of the year for the Roos as they moved to 1-3 in the Sunrise Conference and 1-13 overall.
John, the conference Player of the Week, scored 25 points and grabbed 20 rebounds against the Bobcats for his second 20-20 night in the last three games. John had 25 points and 22 rebounds against Fisher College on Jan. 17.
SUNY Canton led the entire first half thanks to the hot shooting of Tony Valentin (Perth Amboy, N.J.) who scored 18 of his game-high 27 points in the firsts 20 minutes. 12 of those points came from behind the arc as the Roos led 39-33 at halftime.
Trailing by nine points with 13:42 left in the second half, Paul Smith's (0-4, 0-13) put together a furious comeback and reeled off a 17-7 run over the next eight minutes to take their first lead of the game following a basket from Jimmy Noel.
The Bobcats held a slim lead for the next four minutes until Valentin knocked down a jumper with 1:14 left to put the Roos back ahead. Noel hit another jumper for Paul Smith's on their next possession to take a 76-75 lead.
Deric Alston (Jacksonville, N.C.) then scored on a driving layup and was fouled making it 77-76 SUNY Canton with 48 seconds left. Alston missed the free throw and Noel again scored for the Bobcats for a 78-77 lead. Valentin then made one of two free throws with 10 seconds left to tie the game and Trevor Dupont missed long on a 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.
In the extra session the Roos outscored the Bobcats 12-5 hitting 5 of 9 shots from the field and 2 of 3 from the free throw line.
Alston finished with 14 points and seven rebounds. Josh Wilson (Chaumont, N.Y.) added 18 points and five assists for the Roos.
Noel scored 25 points and collected 10 rebounds for the Bobcats. Kingsley Ukwubiwe added 13 points and 17 rebounds.
