Afiba Moore (6) heads away a corner kick
November 5, 2007
(Portland, Maine)- The SUNY Canton men's soccer team came up just
short in the Sunrise Conference championship game as they lost to the
University of Maine at Fort Kent 2-0 Monday in Portland, Maine. The
No. 2 Roos end their season at 12-5.
The top-seeded Bengals held the Roos to 10 shots, two of which went on goal. The Roos best scoring chance came with 14 minutes left in regulation. Repton Abrahams (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who scored the game-winning goal in the semifinals against Machias, took control of the ball and fired a quick, hard shot that was just deflected wide by Fort Kent keeper Derick Plourde, who had two saves in the game.
Both teams played a hard, close game before the Bengals broke through in the 27th minute. Luka Odak carried the ball down the right wing and flicked a cross to middle that was headed past Roos goalies Steven Bullock (Edwards, N.Y.) by Andre Anderson.
Anderson then made it 2-0 seven minutes later when he split the Roos defense and fired a low rocket into the left corner.
Bullock had seven terrific saves for SUNY Canton. Chris Hill (Watertown, N.Y.) played the final five minutes in goal for SUNY Canton and had one save.
Fort Kent (20-0), the 19th-ranked team in the nation, advances to the NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship in Kansas starting on Nov. 14.
