(Portland, Maine)- The third-seeded SUNY Canton men's soccer team put up a valiant effort against top-seeded and nationally-ranked University of Maine at Fort Kent but eventually fell 3-0 in the championship game of the Sunrise Conference tournament on Sunday at Memorial Field in Portland, Maine. The Roos end their season at 10-8-2 while the 11th-ranked Bengals stayed unbeaten at 20-0 and will advance to the NAIA national tournament starting on November 22.

SUNY Canton neutralized the Bengals potent offense for nearly 70 minutes with a great defensive effort, especially by freshman goalie Eamon Case (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) who played one of his best games of the year. Case finished with 11 saves, several terrific punch outs and he never gave up a rebound to the Bengals.

SUNY Canton had two good scoring chances in the second half. With 37 minutes left Bismark Ansah (Bronx, N.Y.) sent a low, hard shot towards goal that bounced off the right post. With under 10 minutes remaining the Roos had a direct kick from 25 yards out that Repton Abrahams (Brooklyn, N.Y.) sent over the top of the net.

Fort Kent finally broke through the Roos defense in the 75th minute. Dwayne Smith headed in a goal off a cross from Keith Williams, II. In the 86th minute Walford Stewart scored off a blocked shot by the defense and then Andre Anderson completed the scoring in the 87th minute scoring off another defensive deflection.
