Free Throw Shooting Carries Roos Past UMFK
(Fort Kent, Maine)- The SUNY Canton women's basketball team came out on top in a battle of unbeatens in the Sunrise Conference as they held off the University of Maine at Fort Kent 69-63 on Saturday in Maine. The Roos moved to 4-0 in the conference and 4-6 overall while the Bengals dropped to 3-1 and 8-9.
After a back and forth first half that saw four ties and two lead changes, the Bengals held a slim 35-32 lead at the break.
The see-saw action continued into the second half. The final tie of the game came after a pair of Jackie Maynard (Brasher Falls, N.Y.) free throws knotted the game at 49-49 with 11:04 remaining. That ignited a 15-3 run by the Roos and five minutes later they had built a 10-point lead.
But SUNY Canton then went cold and missed their next seven shots from the floor and Fort Kent capitalized scoring nine straight points to pull within one at 62-61 with 1:49 left.
Kristi Farrell (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) then buried a 3-pointer on the Roos next possession and Lauren Ploof (Hammond, N.Y.) sank four straight free throws in the final 51 seconds to secure the victory.
SUNY Canton shot 40 percent from the floor and a season-high 88 percent from the free throw line. The Roos hit their first 16 shots from the stripe and finished 23-for-26.
Shannon LaFave (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) notched her second career double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Ploof also had a double-double, the third of her career, with 16 points and 11 rebounds. She also had four assists and four steals.
Megan Davis (Hammond, N.Y.) added 15 points and two steals. Farrell finished with eight points and four assists and Maynard chipped in with four points and seven rebounds.
Arcilla Jeffers led the Bengals with 14 points and 13 boards. Ashley Ames and Shir Fuchs also had 14 points apiece. Ames also grabbed seven rebounds and blocked four shots.
