Roos End Regular Season With 78-40 Win Over Machias
(Potsdam, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton women's basketball team closed out
the regular season with a convincing 78-40 win over the University of
Maine at Machias Sunday afternoon at Clarkson University's Alumni Gym.
The Roos, who captured the Sunrise Conference regular season title on
Saturday, end the regular season 11-1 in the conference and 11-8 overall
and will be the top seed in the upcoming tournament next weekend in
Portland, Maine. The Clippers are now 4-8 in the conference and 11-15
overall and are still in the hunt for the final spot in the conference
tournament.
On Sunday the Roos shot 40 percent from the floor and out rebounded Machias 45-37 including a 20-13 edge on the offensive glass. SUNY Canton also shot a season-high 89 percent from the free throw line (17-for-19) helped out by Lauren Ploof (Hammond, N.Y.) who sank 11 of 12 shots from the stripe including 10 in a row at one point. Ploof had hit four straight free throws in the final minute on Saturday that helped the Roos beat the University of Maine at Fort Kent for the regular season title.
Ploof finished with 15 points, eight assists, six steals and three rebounds.
Julie Vander Wiel (Malone, N.Y.) also scored 15 points as she shot 7-for-8 from the field. Shannon LaFave (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) added 14 points and two rebounds and Jackie Maynard (Brasher Falls, N.Y.) chipped in a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds.
Sara Wells and Katy Constant each scored 11 points to lead the Clippers. Angela Moody added eight points and Caitlin Heller had six points and five rebounds.
