Roos Suffer First Conference Loss to St. Joseph's
(Canton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton women's basketball team suffered their
first Sunrise Conference defeat on Sunday as they fell to the College
of St. Joseph 80-73 at St. Lawrence University's Burkman Gym. The Roos
dropped to 7-1 in the conference and 7-7 overall and the Fighting Saints
improved to 6-2 and 11-9.
After a wild first half that saw seven ties and the lead change hands eight times, St. Joseph led at the break 39-37.
The Roos took their final lead of the game after a pair of free throws from Shannon LaFave (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) with just over 16 minutes left in the second half.
The Fighting Saints took the lead for good on their next possession on a basket from Tahara Pleasure.
Lauren Ploof (Hammond, N.Y.) led SUNY Canton with 19 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Kristi Farell (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) drilled four 3-pointers and had 17 points. Megan Davis (Hammond, N.Y.) contributed 14 points and seven rebounds. LaFave finished with 11 points and seven rebounds and Jackie Maynard (Brasher Falls, N.Y.) chipped in with eight points and nine boards.
Irene Tompkins poured in a game-high 26 points and hauled in 16 rebounds
for the Fighting Saints. Tompkins also hit a milestone in the game as
she went over 1,000 points in her career. Michelle Thompson buried four
3-pointers and had 20 points. Pleasure ended with eight points and six
assists and Linda Clements added six points and two rebounds.
