Women's Basketball Announces Team Awards
(Canton, N.Y.)- The women's basketball team announced their 2009 team awards at the athletic department's year-end picnic on May 9.
The Roos Most Valuable Player was junior forward Jackie Maynard (Brasher Falls, N.Y.). Maynard was second on the team in both scoring (9.2) and rebounding (5.5). She averaged 1.3 assists, shot 42 percent from the field, 69 percent from the free throw and collected 16 steals and three blocks in 24 games.
The Most Valuable Offensive Player was sophomore forward Shannon LaFave (Ogdensburg, N.Y.). LaFave, who was named to the all-Sunrise Conference second team, scored a team-high 12.4 points per game and grabbed 4.9 rebounds. She shot 45 percent from the field and 71 percent from the free throw line.
The Most Valuable Defensive Player was freshman forward Teresa Morley (Ogdensburg, N.Y.). Morley hauled in a team-leading 8.4 rebounds per game and averaged 6.3 points and 1.1 steals while shooting 40 percent from the floor.
The Most Improved Player was freshman forward Nicole Davidson (Hammond, N.Y.). Davidson averaged 5.1 points and 2.8 rebounds per game and shot 49 percent from the floor.
The Coaches Award went to senior forward Alicia Abbey (Mayville, N.Y.). Abbey contributed 3.4 points and 2.4 rebounds per game.
The Rookie of the Year went to freshman guard Brittany Kenyon (Hammond, N.Y.). Kenyon, who was the Sunrise Conference Rookie of the Year and a second team selection, averaged 9.1 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.3 steals per game. She shot 69 percent from the free throw line.
Several other players were recognized at the banquet. Abbey and fellow senior Kristi Farrell (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) were recognized as two of the first four-year athletes in SUNY Canton history. They joined Dennis Salmon (soccer), Vanessa Badlam (soccer) and Jacques DeMars (baseball) for that honor. Farrell appeared in 100 career games and scored 931 points (9.3), grabbed 326 rebounds (3.2) and dished out 245 assists (2.4) and sank 161 3-pointers. Abbey appeared in 80 career games and scored 493 points (6.1), hauled in 437 rebounds (5.4) and made 78 steals.
Junior forward Julie Vander Wiel (Malone, N.Y.) was recognized for receiving the Most Outstanding Scholar Athlete Award for women's basketball in the Sunrise Conference. The Criminal Investigations major averaged 5.0 points and 2.6 rebounds per game.
Sophomore guard Mindy Small (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) was honored for leading the team in assists this year. Small passed out 97 assists for a 4.0 average.
