(Potsdam, N.Y.)- SUNY Canton rallied to beat the University of Maine at Presque Isle 57-51 Sunday afternoon at Clarkson University's Alumni Gym. The Roos improved to 9-3 in the Sunrise Conference and 10-14 overall on Pink Day. SUNY Canton joined the Women's Basketball Coaches Association in the Pink Zone initiative, a global effort to raise awareness for breast cancer. The Roos and SUNY Canton staff wore special pink t-shirts and held several fundraisers during the game. All proceeds will go towards the American Cancer Society and Coaches vs. Cancer.

The Roos got off to a slow start against the Owls, who fell to 9-2 in the conference and 12-7 overall. Presque Isle opened a 24-9 lead with 5:59 left in the first half. Nicole Davidson (Hammond, N.Y.) then sparked a key run for the Roos scoring nine points in a 13-4 closing run that slashed the lead to five points at 27-22 at halftime.

SUNY Canton trailed for the first part of the second half before Jackie Maynard (Brasher Falls, N.Y.) scored with 14:05 remaining to give the Roos a one-point lead. Presque Isle regained the lead and held it until Brittany Kenyon (Hammond, N.Y.) nailed a 3-pointer with 5:49 left to deadlock the game at 48-48.

Julie Vander Wiel (Malone, N.Y.) broke the tie and gave the Roos the lead for good a minute later. Maynard and Vander Wiel scored again and Kristi Farrell (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) sank a 3-pointer to boost the Roos lead to nine with two minutes on the clock. Presque Isle missed 11 shots down the stretch and the only points they could muster was a pair of free throw from Megan Korhonen and one from Emily Moore.

SUNY Canton and Presque Isle will meet again in the Sunrise Conference tournament next weekend in Concord, N.H. The Owls have one final game remaining against regular-season champions University of Maine at Fort Kent on Tuesday.
