Fenner's Focus

Alumna Cristina Fenner’s photography business is the picture of success. As a 2014 graduate of the Graphic and Multimedia Design (GMMD) program, she has quickly transformed a prior hobby into a thriving career based in the North Country.

Her entrepreneurial journey began in 2011 when she posted her photos from an introductory photography class on Facebook. People took an interest in her work, and she started receiving requests to shoot professional portraits and weddings.

From there, word of mouth helped boost her name recognition, and the wedding jobs grew steadily from year to year. She eventually brought on additional photographers to assist with the increased work load and added a videographer to round out her team.

“My professors were very supportive of what I was trying to achieve and willing to advise me on the professional projects I was working on; whether it was evolving my photo skills, building my website or designing my logo,” Fenner said. “Kathleen Mahoney and Greg Kie in particular were very generous with their time.”

Looking back, she said skills she learned in the GMMD program were crucial when it came time to create her marketing materials, noting that she essentially built her business from the ground up while still in school.

When asked what makes SUNY Canton an ideal place to earn a degree, she said it’s the variety of majors and courses the College offers, as well as the personalized attention students receive.

“My professors were very supportive of what I was trying to achieve and willing to advise me on the professional projects I was working on; whether it was evolving my photo skills, building my website or designing my logo,” Fenner said. “Kathleen Mahoney and Greg Kie in particular were very generous with their time.”

In the spirit of paying it forward, Fenner is sharing her knowledge with future graduates by teaching an introductory photo course at SUNY Canton. “I think it’s important to help people and teach them how to be successful and self-sufficient,” she said.
