A Pet's Best Friend
Alysia Maynard '08 & '10
Alysia M. Maynard '08 and '10 is helping animals find their “forever homes” as the executive director of the Potsdam Humane Society.
Maynard, who earned an associate degree in Veterinary Science Technology and a bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Services Management, was selected for the position in August. She has worked at the shelter as a veterinary technician since 2008.
“Alysia is a wonderful example of how our two-year and four-year programs mesh together,” said Veterinary Science Technology Professor Dr. Anthony Beane. “Our two-year program helped to form a caring, competent licensed veterinary technician, while our four-year program helped to form and polish a professional director of a humane society that cares for more than 1,000 animals each year.”
“Alysia is a wonderful example of how our two-year and four-year programs mesh together,” said Veterinary Science Technology Professor Dr. Anthony Beane.
One of her primary goals as executive director, Maynard said, is to focus on community outreach. She is working with local schools to create animal welfare awareness programs for children. Also, to reduce the number of homeless pets, she emphasizes the importance of educating the public about being responsible pet owners.
“In order to tackle the issue of pet overpopulation in our area, we need to increase awareness of our spay or neuter programs," she said.
