Emergency and Disaster Management - FAQ's.

Small logo What is emergency management?
Emergency management is a rapidly growing profession for those who want to learn how to lead organizations in preparing for, responding to, recovering from, and mitigation emergencies and disasters.

Small logo What is the Emergency and Disaster Management Program (EADM)?
The EADM program is a bachelor’s degree in technology offered entirely online by the State University of New York, Canton College of Technology (SUNY-Canton). The program’s first courses were offered October 2006.

Small logo Where can I learn more about the EADM program?
The website for the Emergency and Disaster Management program at SUNY Canton is: http://www.canton.edu/business/emergency_disaster.html. You can register for non-degree admissions status immediately at www.canton.edu/onlinereg/oc_register.html. A brochure on the program can be found at http://www.canton.edu/business/brochures/emg_disaster.pdf

Small logo Do I have to pay Out-of-State Tuition?
If you’re not a New York resident and want to minimize your out-of-pocket costs, the flexible schedule available at SUNY-Canton can help you achieve your goals – and at a very modest cost. For example, if a student were to take 9 hours in both Fall and Spring semesters, they could then also take 3-6 credit hours during the college popular Winterm (between Fall and Spring semesters) and/or during the Summer semester. Taking advantage of these options would allow a student to take a full-time load (24-30 credit hours per year) at part-time rates.

Small logo What kinds of careers are available?
Jobs in emergency management can be found in government (federal, state and local), business and industry, and non-profit agencies (American Red Cross). An excellent site for looking at current employment opportunities is the International Association of Emergency Managers at http://www.iaem.com/resources/Career/Job_bulletin_board/cgi-bin/dcboard.pl

Small logo What are the requirements for the Bachelor of Technology degree?
The requirement for the Bachelor’s of Technology degree can be found at http://www.canton.edu/business/emergency_disaster_description.html

Small logo What courses are offered?
Course descriptions for the program are located at: http://www.canton.edu/course_descriptions/emergency.html

Small logo Is an internship required?
Completing a Culminating Experience Internship would be highly advisable for anyone whom is not presently working in the emergency management field or a related field. For those who are presently employed in this or related professions, a Senior Project option is available. Students may also substitute additional emergency management electives to satisfy this requirement.

Small logo What if I want to transfer into the EADM program?
Information about transferring into the EADM program can be found on the Admissions website at http://www.canton.edu/admissions/transfer.html Essentially, after you have applied to SUNY-Canton, and your college transcripts have been received, they will be evaluated in the appropriate Dean’s office.

Small logo I don’t want to wait! How can I get into the program right now?
If you are sure you want to be in the program and there isn’t time to do the normal admissions process you can register as a non-degree or non-matriculating student. You can find out about that option at http://www.canton.edu/admissions/nonmatriculated.html

Small logo I’m not sure how I’ll do taking online courses -- How can I check it out?
If you have any doubts or questions about online learning, access our “sample” course – a one week session on Disaster Mythology – at www.bb.canton.edu (Username: Guest2006 and Password: Guest2006). At that site, you can sample what online learning at SUNY Canton is all about. I think you’ll find it’s easy to use and flexible enough to fit around your busy schedule.
