Creating Your Faculty/Staff
Web Page

  1. First have all the content  you wish to have on your web page on a disk.  We can scan photos for you if necessary.
  2. Material to consider including would be a photo, short biographical information,  academic and professional background information,  interests, hobbies, and courses taught, a course syllabus, etc.
  3. Make an appointment with Robbie Gittings, Web Coordinator, FOB 204, 386-7376 to create your page.  It is helpful but not necessary for you to have an idea how you would like your page laid out. You will be using Netscape Composer and the template already created for your convenience.

  4. Using the Template
~ You may wish to print these directions before starting your web page. ~
    1. Open Netscape
    2. Create a folder on your desktop or disk and name it your email username.    All your files will be saved to this folder.
    3. Click here > Template
    4. Go to File >Save as:  default    to the folder you just created. This is now your home page.
    5. While still in Netscape, open Composer, then click open and click on the page you have just saved  (default)
    6. You are now ready to insert your information. You can cut and paste your  information or type directly into the blocks from a word or word perfect document.
    7. After inserting your information, click on Save (in the toolbar at the top of the page), and then Preview ( in the toolbar at the top of the page) to see what the page will look like.
    8. Check to be sure you have saved all photos, clipart, attachments, additional pages etc. in your folder.  You can then save the folder onto a disk, or you can email each piece of the folder to the Web Coordinator. It can then be loaded onto the server, and linked to the faculty/staff directory.

  5. During your appointment, you will find how easy it will be to update and maintain your page.
  6. After your page has been created, a link will be created on the Faculty/Staff directory page.  Additional links to Blackboard will be created if appropriate.
  7. You will be shown how to use FTP (File Transfer Protocol) to load your your information into your web folder onto the server.
  8. You will be given access to your web folder as you will need to update your page as necessary.

Helpful Hints
All information can be typed in Note Pad or Word Pad, then cut and pasted into the block on the template page.   The block will expand as necessary.  You can also type information directly into the block if you prefer.

Arial or Verdana are 2 fonts that are recommended,  They are easily read on the web and present a crisp clear page.

Some things to remember:

  1. Bigger, bolder, type faces are NOT better.
  2. Avoid using underlined text.  Underlining is reserved for links.
  3. Try to keep your web page to 1- 2 typed pages per web page, because no one likes to scroll forever.
  4. In placing images, remember the number of images and the size of the images will impact the load-time of your page.  Keep them  small in relative size to your page.  If larger pics are necessary, consider making a link to another page from a thumbnail photo on your main page.
  5. Remember to fill in the Alt text  when adding images.
  6. Remember to always have a link home.
  7. The standard footer has also been included in the template, for ease of navigation to other areas on the site.
  8. You may experiment with different background textures and colors, as well as different text colors. However, remember that colors should be in high contrast, this especially aides those with visual impairments.
  9. Always  remember to test all links to be sure they work, and colors, to be sure they can be seen clearly.
