Message from the Director
Mission of the Alternative and Renewable Energy Systems
Our mission is to provide research and education in alternative and renewable energy technologies, focusing on practical energy conversion to meet the evolving demand for sustainable development.
Need for Such a Program
The need for an alternative energy program will serve more than just the four counties of Franklin, Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence. It will serve the whole State of New York by providing trained technologists who can assist with the ever increasing need to apply alternative energy to new and existing buildings and transportation systems.
The 109th US Congress initiated two very important bills recently that further lend credence to this program. HR 737 and HR 423 on our nation's emerging energy program needs for potential renewable energy and efficiency improvements. In New York State, Governor George Pataki's Executive Order number 111 will create a need for trained professionals to meet green standards in state buildings. According to industry professionals and noted educational leaders, the noted executive orders will spur a growing demand for qualified technologists to work hand-in-hand with engineers to bring the practical application of alternative energy to life.
Currently there are no other institutions in our geographical region offering this type of program. We offer a bachelor degree in engineering technology. SUNY Canton will enhance educational opportunities by providing training to students who do not wish to leave Northern New York. We will train technologists in this program who are able to become competent team members with all the skills necessary to assist in solving technology issues.
