About Michael Ringer
Michael Ringer's original paintings, bronze sculptures, and etching can be found in private and corporate collections around the world. He has art degrees from the Rochester Institute of Technology and the University of Buffalo including his Masters. Michael began painting and sculpting full time after retiring from teaching in 1990. Ringer has completed over fifteen hundred works of the North Country in watercolour, oil, acrylic, pastel, bronze, and intaglio prints.
Northern New York, including the St. Lawrence River and the Adirondack Mountains are his primary interest. The majority of Michael's paintings focus on this region but be has completed works as far north as Gaspe, Quebec.
His Adirondack paintings of the rivers, mountains, and lakes depict the rugged side of the Adirondacks. In Thomas Quinn's book Angling in Art, (1991) published in England, the author describes Ringer's painting; "Contemporary American Artist, Michael Ringer, brilliantly creates the atmosphere of a days fishing. His work is solidly traditional, and it harks back to the work of Winslow Homer in the sense that it captures the scale if the landscape in which the angler finds himself."
Michael Ringer had produced six bronze sculptures based on Northern New York subjects. His most recent bronze is an Adirondack themed work titled The Carry. It depicts a man portaging an Adirondack guide boat or a canoe along side of a cascading river. He is currently working on another bronze with an Adirondack theme of a fly fisherman in a canoe.
Ringer is the host of the nationally broadcast PBS show The Artists' World with Michael Ringer. The show covers a wide variety of topics concerning the artist including publishing, casting in bronze, intaglio printmaking, and safety in the studio to mention but a few. The 13 week series airs to a potential one hundred million people in the US and Canada and is now in its third season.
Five books have been published on Ringer's work in the North Country and he is a member of the Outdoor Writes Association of America. Ringer's work has been featured in numerous local, state, national and international publications and recently was featured in La Practique Des Arts, published in France. The art magazine featured Ringer as a traditional American painter and sculptor.
His studio and home are long the banks of the St. Lawrence River near Alexandria Bay and he often visits the Adirondacks to paint. He owns the St. Lawrence Gallery near Alexandria Bay and a second Gallery in downtown Clayton, New York.
Michael Ringer lives with his wife Meg and five daughters. Some of his other works may be seen on his web site at www. michaelringer.com
