SUNY Canton College Council Awards

Distinguished Faculty Award

Small logo The President solicits nominations for the annual award beginning in October of each year. Nominations are accepted until February 1. Nominees shall be faculty members who are currently employed at the College. Nominations should be accompanied by a complete resume, a listing of accomplishments which qualify the individual for the title "distinguished", the endorsement of the Faculty Assembly Recognition and Awards Committee, and written support for the nominee by the nominator(s) using as a guide the following criteria:

  • Mastery of subject matter as demonstrated by such things as advanced degrees, licenses, honors, awards and reputation in the subject matter field.
  • Effectiveness in teaching as demonstrated by such things as judgment of colleagues, development of teaching materials or new courses and student reaction.
  • Scholarly ability as demonstrated by such things as success in developing and carrying out significant research work in the subject matter field, contribution to the arts, publications, and reputation among colleagues.
  • Effectiveness in University service as demonstrated by such things as college and University service, committee work, administrative work and work with students or community in addition to the normal teacher-student relationships.
  • Continuing growth as demonstrated by such things as reading, research or other activities to keep abreast of current developments in one's field and being able to handle increased responsibility successfully.

Nominators are not restricted to this list and may add other criteria.

After receipt of the nominations from the Employee Recognition and Awards Committee, the College Council shall act on the nominations at the March meeting. The Council may elect to interview any or all of the nominees. If no suitable nominee is found or only one nominee is presented to the Council and that person's qualifications are not exemplary, then no award shall be given. Nominations shall be considered only for the year submitted. Nominees not receiving the award will not be automatically reactivated in following years.

The award shall consist of an appropriately lettered and framed citation to be awarded during graduation exercises by the Chairman of the College Council. Further, the recipient's name shall be inscribed on a permanent plaque to be prominently displayed in the foyer of French Hall. In addition, a cash award shall be given to the recipient. Excellence in College Service Award

Small logo The President solicits nominations for the annual award beginning in October of each year. Nominations are accepted until February 1. Nominees shall be members of the non-teaching professional staff or library academic employees who are currently employed at the College. Nominations should be accompanied by a complete resume, a listing of accomplishments which illustrate "excellence in college service", the endorsement of the Faculty Assembly Recognition and Awards Committee, and written support for the nominee by the nominator(s) using as a guide the following criteria:

  • Effectiveness in performance as demonstrated by success in carrying out assigned duties and responsibilities, efficiency, productivity and relationships with colleagues.
  • Professional ability as demonstrated by invention or innovation in professional, scientific, administrative or technical areas such as the development or refinement of programs, methods or apparatus.
  • Effectiveness in University service as demonstrated by such things as successful committee work, participation in local campus or University governance or involvement in campus or University-related student or community activities.
  • Continuing growth as demonstrated by continuing education, participation in professional organizations and enrollment in training programs.
  • Mastery of specialization as demonstrated by degrees, licenses, honors, awards and reputation in professional field.

Employee Recognition Award

Nominees shall be members of the classified staff, including CSEA, Council 82, PEF, Research Foundation and College Association Employees who are currently employed at the College. Nominations should be accompanied by a listing of accomplishments which illustrate exceptional service, the endorsement of the Employee Recognition Award Committee, and written support for the nominee by the nominator(s) using as a guide the following criteria:

  • Effectiveness in performance as demonstrated by success in carrying out assigned duties and responsibilities, efficiency, productivity, relationships with colleagues, providing innovative solutions to everyday problems, and dedication to improving the quality of work and the working environment.
  • Participation as demonstrated by involvement in campus-related community service, committee work, volunteerism, and/or serving students or the campus community.
  • Continuing growth as demonstrated by continuing education or enrollment in training programs in the nominee's field of expertise.
