Holiday Staffing
Academic year staff observe those holidays and other breaks built into the academic calendar. Calendar year and college year profesional staff observe those legal holidays identified by the Board of Trustees which fall within their work year. The college observes:
- New Year's Day
- Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
- Lincoln's Birthday
- Washington's Birthday
- Memorial Day
- Independence Day
- Labor Day
- Columbus Day
- Election Day
- Veterans Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Day
Employees who are eligible to observe holidays are granted a compensatory day off when a holiday falls on a Saturday. An employee who is required to work on a holiday shall be granted a compensatory day off, which shall be scheduled at a time mutually convenient to the employee and the college within three (12) months from the day granted. Specific holiday entitlements are described in more detail in various collective bargaining agreements.

+ Election Day and Lincoln’s Birthday are designated as floating holidays in most employee contracts. In the UUP Agreement, the Friday after Thanksgiving has traditionally been designated a holiday in lieu of Washington’s Birthday.
* On the Friday after Thanksgiving, a liberal leave policy will be in effect for non-essential services. Employees are encouraged to take the day off with appropriate charges to leave credits.
** Holidays falling on a Sunday are observed on the following Monday. Christmas Day will be observed on Monday, December 26th. New Year's Day will be observed on Monday, January 2nd.
A liberal leave policy will also be in effect from Tuesday, December 27, 2011 through Friday, December 30, 2011 for non-essential services. Employees are encouraged to take the time off with appropriate charges to leave credits.
Any employees who have insufficient leave credits or choose to work on these days, should notify their supervisors at least a week in advance so that special work arrangements can be made. The Director of Human Resources will coordinate arrangements.
Holiday staffing levels, as defined in Sec. 8.4 B of the Personnel Handbook for Faculty and Professional Staff, are as follows:
- Minimal Staffing: This level of staffing generally provides for telephone coverage of administrative offices; however those areas with academically related functions may require more staffing. Appropriate staffing levels are determined by each functional Vice President.
- Essential Services: This generally means only University Police, heating and emergency operations. Any additional staffing requires prior approval of the Vice President for Administrative Services.
It should be noted that various collective bargaining agreements provide for paid holidays throughout the year. Not all contracts are identical. This listing sets forth the College’s policy with respect to holiday staffing; it does not authorize holiday pay for all employees.
