Sophos for Windows

Download and Install

IMPORTANT! You must uninstall any other anti-virus program prior to installing Sophos. Failing to do so may cause computer instability and possible data loss.

NOTE: The Sophos installer is a large file (61MB).
Approximate download times: dial-up @ 56Kbps = 2h32m ; Cable/DSL @ 1.5Mbps = 6m28s

Download to your desktop the Sophos Installer (login required with your network account)

Double-click on the Sophos installer (Sophos7_0809.exe). Extraction of the setup files and installation of Sophos will take place. When installation is complete there will be a blue shield in the system tray.

Right-click on the blue shield and click "Open Sophos Anti-Virus" to begin configuration.

Configuring Sophos

After installation it is important that you configure Sophos's scanning options. The default settings may not adequately protect your computer.
For more information about using Sophos, please download the user manual (1.5MB)

When you launch Sophos you will be at the home screen..

The Status section provides a quick overview of the status of the on-access scanner, the number of files in quarantine, the Sophos version and when it was last updated. Sophos is configured to look for updates every 60 minutes.

This will launch an immediate scan of your computer for threats.

Depending on how you have Sophos configured, when a virus is found a notification window will open..

..and the Status section will report a quarantined item.

Clicking on 'Manage Quarantine Items' will launch the Quarantine Manager from where you will have options for dealing with the virus.

'Configure Sophos Anti-Virus' opens additional options for more advanced configuration of Sophos.

On-access scanning provides realtime virus protection. By default, files will be scanned as they are accessed ("on read"). Sophos can be configured for more aggressive scanning but will increase scanning time. Please refer to the User Manual for more information.

You should setup Sophos to perform at least a weekly full scan of your computer.

Click here for instructions on setting up Sophos scans or refer to the User Manual.
