SUNY Canton Summer Session Breaks Enrollment Records for Third Straight Year

SUNY Canton OnLineMore students than ever are taking summer courses at SUNY Canton.

The highly successful SUNY Canton Summer Session semesters have reached an all-time high of nearly 1,000 total enrollments, which is a 38 percent increase over the 2008 Summer Session’s 690 enrollments.

“More students are recognizing the convenience and overall value of SUNY Canton,” said SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy. “This is especially true during the condensed online and in-class Summer Sessions, where students can catch up or get ahead.”

The 2009 semester also reflects more than 100 percent growth from the 2007 Summer Session, which had approximately 470 enrollments. Molly A. Mott, Dean of Academic Services and Retention cited the college’s continuing online expansion as a definitive factor in summer session growth.

“About 72 percent of our Summer Session students are taking classes online through SUNY Canton OL,” she said. “As long as they have access to a computer and the Internet, students can participate in their college courses without having to forfeit other summer plans and responsibilities.”

The same holds true for SUNY Canton’s highly qualified faculty members who host their online courses from home or other locations. The college also works with several international professors who are offering their courses from international locations including China and Panama. SUNY Canton’s three Summer Sessions each have approximately 40 online courses.

Course registration remains open for the second term of Summer Session until Monday, June 22 and the college will continue registering students for the third sessions up until the first day of classes. Course topics range from general education courses to offerings in many of SUNY Canton’s career-driven academic programs. SUNY Canton offers a wide variety of career-driven bachelor’s, associate, and certificate programs, as well as three master’s degrees in conjunction with SUNYIT, Utica. Most of SUNY Canton’s new four-year programs are designed so students can take them on-campus, online, or both. SUNY Canton OnLine features more than 100 courses online each semester. The College’s athletic teams belong to the NAIA’s Sunrise Conference, enabling students to compete in their respective sports for four years. Construction is now underway for the College’s new Convocation, Athletic, and Recreation Center.
