SUNY Canton Offers Casino Management at Akwesasne
SUNY Canton will be offering the first of a series of college courses on the Akwesasne St. Regis Mohawk Reservation this Fall.
A three-credit Casino Management (BSAD 391) course will be conducted from 1 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, from Sept. 9 to Dec. 11, at the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Administration Training Room. Assistant Professor of Business Administration Patrick A.T. Hamilton, a former marketing professional for the Princess Casino in the Bahamas, will instruct the course.
“We will be taking a business-end approach to running and marketing a casino,” Hamilton said. “The skills that students will learn through this course are very desirable to potential employers in the casino industry.”

Assistant Professor of Business Administration Patrick A.T. Hamilton will instruct BSAD 391.
Hamilton plans to offer future courses specifically highlighting business practices exclusive to the industry. The Assistant Professor would like to see a minor in Casino Management accompany the college’s four-year Management program in years to come. The College is currently developing other courses to be offered at the reservation both through SUNY Canton OnLine and in face-to-face formats.
“Most people think of casinos from the perspective of a patron,” Hamilton noted. “There are organizational structures, consumer behavior patterns, and overall strategies for success exclusive to the industry that managers need to consider when running a successful business. We want to show how a casino runs from the management side.”
Hamilton said the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino is one of the top employers in the area and is looking to expand in the future. “This will give our students another good option for a career right here in the North Country,” he said.
The course is being offered through SUNY Canton’s Office of Lifelong Learning. For more information or to register, contact the Office of Lifelong Learning at 315-386-7102, or email lifelonglearning@canton.edu. There will also be an information and registration session from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2, in the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Administration Training Room.
SUNY Canton offers a wide variety of career-driven bachelor’s, associate, and certificate programs, as well as three master’s degrees in conjunction with SUNYIT, Utica. Most of SUNY Canton’s new four-year programs are designed so students can take them on-campus, online, or both. SUNY Canton OnLine features more than 100 courses online each semester. The College’s athletic teams belong to the NAIA’s Sunrise Conference, enabling students to compete in their respective sports for four years. Construction is now underway for the College’s new Convocation, Athletic, and Recreation Center.

I read about this course in the daily paper this morning. I work for a non-for-profit prevention agency and I work with a problem gambling grant. I was wondering if this course will be addressing the issue of pathological gamblers, what to look for, refer, etc. Any information you could give me in regards to this course would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
