Martin Luther King III Inspires SUNY Canton

Global change starts at a local and personal level, according to Martin Luther King III.

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a first step,” King said to the collected SUNY Canton audience. “We can be part of the change or we can choose not to be a part of it.”

King, the eldest son of famed civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr., was the featured speaker for Black History Month at the College. His inspirational speech advocated education, affordable health care, and high qualities of life while encouraging a modest lifestyle in order to obtain personal satisfaction. “We spend our time learning how to make a living, but if we spent our time making a life we would have no trouble making a living,” he said.

He mentioned his father’s vision and referenced the famed “I have a dream” speech delivered August 28, 1963 on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. According to King, there are three evils that the nation must overcome: poverty, racism, and militarism. He said despite tremendous strides, that his father’s vision and his dream had not yet been fulfilled.

His lecture resonated with college students and the greater community alike. Student Cooperative Alliance President Jennifer P. Bernadotte said that hearing King speak profoundly impacted her view on her personal life. “He encouraged me to stride for more accomplishments in my own life, to be my best.” she said. “It was the experience of a lifetime.”

King also advocated social involvement and support for global efforts, including relief for Haiti. “I don’t know that we’ve seen a tragedy in this hemisphere quite like the one in Haiti,” he said. “Yet somehow you see Haitian people overcoming these incredible odds. It is amazing to see these people, who basically have nothing, and yet somehow are so thankful that they were somehow spared even though they have to start all over again. It should really be an inspiration to all of us.”

As the founding president and chief executive officer of Realizing the Dream, Inc., King strives to continue the work started by his parents. His presentation at SUNY Canton was an outreach effort to continue his family’s legacy and vision.

St. Lawrence County Clerk Featured at Women’s Business Bootcamp

The luncheon will feature a keynote from St. Lawrence County Clerk Patricia Ritchie.

St. Lawrence County Clerk Patricia Ritchie will be the keynote speaker at the Small Business Development Center’s Women’s Business Bootcamp and Resource Expo.

The Women’s Business Bootcamp will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, March 4, in the SUNY Canton Richard W. Miller Campus Center. Ritchie will be addressing the conference during the luncheon and will be discussing how positive leadership can impact businesses of all sizes.

“This event is a valuable resource for north country women in business,” says Dale A. Rice, SBDC Director. “It provides both educational opportunities and extremely valuable networking experiences that have proven value for our area entrepreneurs.”

Other conference presentations include a marketing through social networking section by Jeff Yette of Slic Network Solutions and a commercial financing presentation with Charles Beach of Key Bank One “We will also be hosting a panel of women business owners who will share their best practices and personal experiences as entrepreneurs,” Rice added.

The Women’s Resource Expo portion features area businesses and organizations and showcases their products and services.

The Women’s Business Bootcamp is $45 per person. Registration as a Resource Expo exhibitor is $30 and includes lunch and the keynote lecture. Registration for both the Bootcamp and exhibit in the Expo is $65.

Going Greener: SUNY Canton Decreases Waste by 21 Percent

More people created less waste last year at SUNY Canton.

The College’s facilities department recently noted that the entire College produced just over 69 tons of garbage in 2009, a 21 percent decrease from the 2008 calendar year. The year also saw more than 5,000 total students enrolled and approximately 500 full- and part-time faculty and staff members.

“We’ve made a remarkable dent in our trash, especially in light of our record enrollment,” said SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy. “Part of the reduction stems from an overall campus awareness about reducing paper usage, becoming more eco-friendly and saving money.”

SUNY Canton is participating in RecycleMania, an international competition for college and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities on their campus communities. The ten-week competition began on Jan. 17 and ends March 27, according to Matthew J. Burnett, who works with students in the Green Campus Committee and is an Assistant Professor in the Graphic and Multimedia Design program.

“Last year, we participated in the benchmark division of the competition, which allowed us to gauge our recycling efforts,” Burnett said. “As second-year participants of the program, the campus will be able to compare outgoing trash and recycling levels to last year.”

Colleges in all 50 states and six international universities participate in RecycleMania.

“Our students really have made this program a success,” Burnett added. “We’ve partnered with some of our College’s Greeks and other student organizations to move the project forward.”

Many of the courses and departments are making the effort to reduce paper usage. The printers and copiers in the library have been set to print on both sides of one sheet of paper, and the campus Telecom department has switched to an online, automated phone billing process. The College’s online division, SUNY CantonOL, has seen an increased number of faculty members encouraging students to print out less materials for their online classes, further realizing the full potential of the ANGEL online learning platform.

The SUNY Canton Athletic Department will be collecting used cell phones and printer cartridges as part of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee’s “Make a Difference” recycling program this year with collection points around campus.

The College uses Casella Waste Management’s Zero-Sort recycling program. Each person is only needs to separate their recyclables from ordinary waste to help with the ongoing sustainability. By using this system, Physical Plant staff members are able to calculate the total amount of non-recyclable garbage removed from the campus annually.

SUNY Canton Offers New General Technology Degree

SUNY Canton has designed a new associate degree to allow students greater flexibility in their technology-based education.

“The General Technology degree program allows students to design an individualized program of study in order to fulfill a unique career goal,” said Canino School of Engineering Technology Dean David J. Wells. “The program allows students to get the background necessary to establish a career and tailor their education to their specific interests.”

The dean mentioned that students can seamlessly transfer into any one of the college’s four-year engineering technology based programs after completing the General Technology degree, including Alternative and Renewable Energy Systems, Industrial Technology Management, and Information Technology. The program also provides another link between the College’s one-year certificate programs and associate degrees. Additionally, students in the new program could also progress into one of three new pending bachelor’s degree programs that are awaiting state approval: Civil and Environmental Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, and Mechanical Engineering Technology.

“We’ve even seen a lot of our career-driven students enroll in cross curricular studies,” Wells said. “A student who starts in the engineering technology fields may opt to transfer into one of the business programs, creating their own unique, well-rounded entrepreneurial education.”

The College received letters of support for the creation of this degree from Schneider Packaging Equipment Co., Inc., in Brewerton, and Ansen Corporation, extolling the value of well-rounded graduates of the program.

“I have been actively recruiting at SUNY Canton for over thirteen years,” said John Sylvester, Field Service Manager at Schneider Packaging and a 1983 SUNY Canton graduate. “The General Technology program is precisely the type of well rounded education and training required to be successful in our industry. I personally intend to continue to recruit candidates from SUNY Canton for the foreseeable future.”

According to General Technology Program Advisor and Associate Professor Rashid Aidun, Ph.D., the first two semesters of the program consist of core-level courses, including physics, computer drafting, programming, English and several elective options. The final two semesters are comprised almost completely of engineering technology electives. Students can enroll in any of the courses available in Automotive Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, Air Conditioning Engineering Technology, and Electrical Engineering Technology, among others.

Both the State University of New York and the New York State Education Department recently approved this program. New and transfer students can apply now for entrance into the program, which will begin in Fall 2010. SUNY Canton Tops 5,000 Students in 2009

SUNY CantonMore than 5,000 students took courses at SUNY Canton in 2009 and applications for next year are up nearly 30 percent.

A record 5,173 students enrolled in courses throughout the Spring, Summer, Fall and Winterterm semesters, setting enrollment records for each semester along the way. The aggregate total was compiled by counting unduplicated college enrollments for the entire year.

The College’s Summerterm grew nearly 40 percent in 2009 and enrolled almost 1,000 students. Winterterm grew 60 percent with 800 students.  The College’s all-time record enrollment was toppled this past Fall Semester with more than 3,300 students.

“There were years when I first started here that we struggled to enroll 2,000 students,” said SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy, who joined the College almost 17 years ago. “Surpassing 5,000 students last year means a great deal to me personally. It’s a considerable accomplishment that demonstrates the year-round extraordinary work of our faculty and staff to reshape our College and its mission. We have definitively grown into a 12-month a year institution.”

Kennedy cites the growing number of bachelor’s degree programs, online courses, international students, and the expanding year-round programs as some of the most prevalent reasons for the recent growth.

Applications for the Fall 2010 Semester are also up dramatically. Overall applications are up 28 percent from last year and up more than 100 percent from four years ago. The College has already received more than 3,200 applications, which is more than double the amount received in February of 2005 and 2006.

“Traditional and non-traditional students are recognizing that we are a College that does more than just educate,” said Kennedy. “We are a college that prepares students for careers.”

SUNY Canton Experts Offer Building Analyst Trainings

Faculty experts from SUNY Canton’s Alternative and Renewable Energy Systems program will be providing valuable Building Performance Institute (BPI) certified Building Analyst training, beginning Feb. 23 in Watertown.

“Every building works as a system,” said Michael J. Newtown, an Assistant Professor in the Alternative and Renewable Energy Systems program and BPI Instructor. “We show contractors why some homes fail, why some excel, and how to resolve residential heating and cooling problems.”

Newtown said that the training uses a “whole house” performance-based approach with the end result of a more comfortable, safe, and durable home.

Upcoming SUNY Canton BPI trainings include courses beginning at:

  • 3 p.m., Feb. 23, at the Cornell Cooperative Extension in Watertown.
  • 9 a.m., March 2, at ComLinks in Malone.
  • 9 a.m., March 15, at Clinton Community College in Plattsburgh.
  • 3 p.m., April 19, at SUNY Canton.

Newtown and his staff of highly trained professionals will also be offering Envelope Professional training beginning at 9 a.m. April 5 at the Cornell Cooperative Extension in Watertown.

“The knowledge contained in the BPI trainings make contractors more marketable to prospective clients,” Newtown said. “As end consumers look to save money and be ‘greener,’ building efficiency is becoming a necessity rather than a luxury.”

The BPI training includes 24 hours of classroom instruction and 12 hours of field training. Topics include identifying building performance problems such as ice dams, air quality issues, calculating energy consumption and analysis, and analyzing buildings using “blower door” technology. Written and field exams for the Building Analyst Professional certification follow the trainings.

New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) will reimburse 75 to 100 percent of the training program fee upon successful completion of the course.

SUNY Canton Volunteer Tax Prep Services Expand Off Campus

SUNY Canton Accounting students will be offering free tax return preparation for the community and have expanded to off-campus locations in Canton and Massena.

For the fifth straight year, students will be working with the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to help low- and moderate-income individuals and families prepare their taxes.

Alissa Jatsenti, a 2009 SUNY Canton Accounting graduate from Canton, helps Nursing Professor Emeritus Mary Jane Doelger prepare her taxes as part of the VITA Program.

The qualifying income bracket for participants is a gross income below $49,000, according to the IRS. Students from SUNY Canton serve as VITA volunteers to increase their own tax preparation skills and help community members learn to file their own taxes.

“We emphasize confidentiality and require a high-level of professionalism,” said Assistant Professor of Accounting Peggy J. Jenkins. “Our fully-qualified and IRS certified students have practiced their preparation skills and are ready to help. We are offering our services at more locations with the hopes of helping more people than ever before.”

Caitlyn Coelho, an Accounting major from Ogdensburg, and Assistant Professor of Accounting Peggy Jenkins help Amado Menna, an Information Technology major from the Bronx, prepare his taxes at SUNY Canton.

Student volunteers will be available when the college is in session in Payson Hall Room 208 until April 8th at the following times:

  • Mondays – 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Tuesdays – 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Wednesdays – 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Thursdays – 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Assistance will also be available off campus from:

  • 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 5, and Friday, March 5, at the One-Stop Career Center in Canton.
  • 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12, and Friday, March 12, at the Massena Unemployment Office.

Appointments are strongly encouraged and are required for military and foreign student returns.

SUNY Canton Automotive Technology Program Reopens in Ultra-Modern Lab

A Feb. 11 grand reopening celebration will begin a fundraising campaign for even more state-of-the art equipment.

SUNY Canton’s signature Automotive Technology program has moved into a completely modernized home with more than double the space for instruction and projects.

The program’s faculty members and students will be holding an open house celebration from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, in the newly renovated section of Nevaldine Technology Center Room 124. Among the events and activities during the open house will be hands-on demonstrations with Automotive Technology students and an official unveiling and campaign kick-off with SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy at 12:30 p.m. The open house and surrounding events are free and open to the public.

“We’re moving into the future by outfitting the automotive lab to handle the latest technology in the industry,” said Canino School of Engineering Technology Dean David J. Wells. “With our upgrades, we stand to be the best career-driven Automotive Technology program in New York and in the Northeastern United States.”

Through a Perkins Vocational and Technical Education Act (VATEA) grant, the department was able to purchase new alignment equipment and a new rotary lift, among other enhancements.

“The open house will be the official start of our Campaign for Excellence with the SUNY Canton Foundation,” said Automotive Technology Program Director Brandon J. Baldwin. “We have more state-of-the-art tools and resources than ever before, but we have a tremendous opportunity to expand our program to meet the demands of the future.”

Baldwin said that donations through the SUNY Canton Foundation will help the department purchase a dynamometer, which is very much like a large treadmill for automobiles. The device would be one-of-a-kind tool in the region that would allow students to measure power, tune, run drive cycles, assist with drivability concerns, and run efficiency experiments.

The Automotive Technology Program currently has several outstanding projects in the works, including building a biodiesel dragster and expanded research with electric and hybrid vehicles.

The labs were first opened to students at the beginning of the Spring 2010 semester, and are part of an overall Nevaldine Technology Center renovation project by Northland Associates, the same company overseeing the construction of the College’s new Convocation Athletic and Recreation Center.

The SUNY Canton Foundation has offered to assist with several of the key upgrades, and will be reaching out to the program’s alumni and supporters to help with further enhancements.
