SUNY Canton Dental Hygiene Major Receives David R. Maynard Student Activities Award
A SUNY Canton Dental Hygiene major is being honored for her volunteer work and fundraising efforts at the College’s 105th Commencement.
Ashley A. Abeling of Perth is the recipient of the annual David R. Maynard Student Activities Award and will be recognized among other award recipients and honorees at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 18, in the Convocation, Athletic and Recreation Center, nicknamed Roos House.
Abeling led a fundraising initiative to cover expenses for 12 of her classmates to attend a dental hygiene seminar in Boston during winter break. She also made lodging and transportation arrangements for the group.
“In my 25 years of teaching, I have never worked with a student with so much energy who is so altruistic and dedicated to others,” said Pamela P. Quinn, curriculum coordinator for SUNY Canton’s Dental Hygiene program. “She is one of the most selfless people I have worked with.”
Abeling has also volunteered her time to mentor incoming SUNY Canton freshman. Following graduation, she plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Dental Hygiene and a master’s degree in Public Health.
The David R. Maynard Student Activities Award is given annually to a student who demonstrates superior citizenship, outstanding leadership, and who has generously given time to extracurricular activities.
