They were presented with the awards at the Nancy R. Auster Honors Convocation held May 1 and will be among other honorees and award recipients recognized during the College’s Commencement at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 18, at the Convocation, Athletic and Recreation Center, nicknamed Roos House.

Outstanding Associate Graduate Award

Megan M. Mydosh from Warwick received the SUNY Canton Outstanding
Associate Graduate Award.

Megan M. Mydosh, a Business Administration major from Warwick, was the recipient of the annual Outstanding Associate Graduate Award, which recognizes students enrolled in two-year programs who have excelled in their academics and other areas of campus life.

Mydosh was named each semester to the President’s List, the College’s highest level of achievement that honors full-time students who earn a semester grade point average (GPA) of 3.75 or higher on a 4.0 scale. She is also a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and was captain of the women’s cross-country team for two years.

In addition to being an outstanding student, her peers, professors and coaches describe her as a dedicated leader who excels at motivating others.

“Megan stands out as one of the most hardworking and motivated young women I have had the pleasure of knowing,” said SUNY Canton’s Women’s Cross Country Head Coach Kathryn Kennedy. “She is a true leader who expects hard work and commitment from her teammates and models the same behavior on a regular basis.”

Mydosh plans to continue her studies at SUNY Canton and earn a bachelor’s degree in Management.

“I’m so thankful to have been chosen to receive the Outstanding Graduate Award,” said Mydosh. “SUNY Canton gives everyone the opportunity to do their best, and I’m happy that I have been able to take advantage of all the resources the College offers to students.”

Outstanding Baccalaureate Graduate Award

Zachary J. Smith from Lisbon received the SUNY Canton Outstanding
Baccalaureate Graduate Award.

There are a select few students who can add overseas missionary work and business ownership to their college resume. Zachary J. Smith, an Industrial Technology major from Lisbon, designed, engineered, managed and led the construction of a $60,000 primary school and training facility in South Sudan.

“My adviser thought the project would fit well with my academic pursuits,” Smith said. “So I dropped my scheduled Spring 2012 classes and worked in Central Africa.”

Smith was selected as the College’s Outstanding Baccalaureate Graduate, in partial acknowledgement of his outstanding missionary work. He was also the vice president of the Campus Ministries club and received a certificate of appreciation for his volunteer work from the Christian Fellowship Center in Madrid.

“Zach’s phenomenal mind gave him the extraordinary power to love and serve more people than most normally would,” said Yu Chin Cheng, an assistant professor and Smith’s adviser. “He is intelligent, diligent and honest. He always has a smile on his face. It has been an honor to be his academic adviser.”

He started college with the goal of graduating with a triple major. He has earned two associate degrees, one in Construction Technology Management and another in Business Administration. He will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Technology Management. Smith has accomplished this remarkable achievement while maintaining a 3.77 GPA.

After earning his Construction Technology Management degree, he started his own construction and contracting business. He attributes his ability to start Z&S Construction directly back to the skills he learned in the degree. “It has been my primary means of income since I started the business in 2011,” he said.

“Through your hard work and perseverance you have changed the fabric of our College,” said Interim SUNY Canton President Carli C. Schiffner at the event held May 1. “Many of you are not only very accomplished academically, but also have given numerous hours of your time for service to our campus and community. We are a better institution because of your hard work and dedication.”

The College’s Honors Convocation is an annual, formal ceremony designed to recognize students’ academic, civic and overall achievement. Each year, the ceremony is named after the most dedicated and revered faculty members of the College’s history. This year’s ceremony was named for SUNY Canton Distinguished Professor Emerita Nancy R. Auster, who taught for more than 25 years.

Iain Haley Pollock will speak at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, at the Kingston Theater. The event is free and open to the public.

Pollock’s collection of poetry, “Spit Back a Boy,” won the prestigious Cave Canem Poetry Prize, which recognizes exceptional first books by African-American poets.

His childhood experiences of growing up the son of an African-American mother and white father influenced his work, and the title of his book.

Pollock’s work has also appeared in the Poetry Society of America’s “In Their Own Words” feature and publications, including AGNI, American Poetry Review, Boston Review, Callaloo, Drunken Boat and Indiana Review. He will discuss his personal connection to the larger world of poetry as well as read some of his own works.

SUNY Canton Assistant Professor of English Philip K. LaMarche, who created the Living Writers Series, said “Pollock’s poetry nimbly weaves between the worlds of blues and jazz, love and loss, black and white, all with a stunning dexterity, sincerity and beauty.”

This is the second semester of the Living Writers Series. LaMarche said he arranges guest lectures to correspond with his Living Writers Course curriculum so that students enrolled in the class can read the books by authors scheduled to visit the College.

The last installment of this semester’s series will be Siobhan Fallon, author of the much-heralded book “You Know When the Men Are Gone,” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 24, in the Kingston Theater. The event is free and open to the public.

Several students are offering free tax preparation assistance as part of their Accounting coursework on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to noon and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. until April 4 in Cook Hall Room 116. Appointments are strongly encouraged.

Students from the College work with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program to increase their own tax preparation skills and to teach community members how to correctly file their own personal taxes in the future. The Internal Revenue Service sponsors the VITA program. Although this service is free and open to the public, the qualifying income bracket for participants is a gross income below $49,000, according to the IRS.

Mary Karr, author of award-winning memoirs, was one of the previous guest speakers at SUNY Canton’s Living Writers Series. The series will be funded through the College Foundation this spring.

The SUNY Canton College Foundation recently announced the recipients of the 7^th annual Campus Enhancement Awards.

“These projects are made possible through unrestricted donations, which are an important resource the College utilizes to fund creative and innovative projects that benefit our community,” said Vice President for Advancement and Executive Director of the SUNY Canton College Foundation David M. Gerlach. “We are extremely grateful to all of the donors who have supported the Foundation.”

Some unrestricted donations come directly from SUNY Canton faculty and staff members. Last year, more than 230 employees donated approximately $60,000 to the Foundation via payroll deductions.

Among this year’s Campus Enhancement Awards are:

• The Living Writers lecture series during the spring semester.
• Instructional software for nursing students.
• A professional practice field trip for students in the graphic and multimedia design program.
• Healthy lifestyle training programs.
• A student field trip to the United Nations building in New York City.
• Funds for students to attend the 2013 Regional Steel Bridge Competition.
• New equipment and other upgrades to the student resource library.
• Problem-solving software for engineering students.

In addition to the annual Campus Enhancement Awards, the College Foundation also funds student scholarships, professional development opportunities for faculty and staff, and unique learning and research fellowships.

The new advertisements feature current students and employers promoting new four-year degree programs, including applied psychology, homeland security, and civil and environmental technology. The commercials’ backdrop consists of scenic campus settings, such as the newly constructed footbridges, which connect the campus to downtown Canton, as well as the new athletic center and Grasse River Housing Suites.

The spots also emphasize unique aspects of the campus, including the pet-friendly residence hall wing and the College’s proximity to the Grasse River, which allows students to enjoy canoeing and kayaking.

Earlier this year, SUNY Canton received a best of category award for their 2011-12 television advertising campaign from the SUNY Council on University Advancement. In 2011, the College received a judges’ citation for its previous 30-second spots in the same category.

The College’s funeral services administration program is one of the very few four-year mortuary science majors in the United States. It is also one of the only programs of its kind within the SUNY System.

“The funeral services administration program has been designed to place a greater emphasis on the skills and knowledge needed to equip graduates with practical information that can be used in the rapidly changing funeral profession,” Penepent said. “Students in the program have an opportunity to apply the knowledge learned in the classroom in their practicum and internship experience in a funeral home of their choosing.”

Currently, the funeral services administration program has approximately 40 students. The program is designed for first-time first-year students and working professionals.

One of the program’s many advantages is that funeral directors who are currently licensed and working in the profession have an opportunity to complete their degree online and complete their bachelor degree at their own pace, Penepent said. The program grants licensed funeral directors life experience credits for their skills and knowledge in the profession.

“I wish a program like this existed when I was going to mortuary school because I would have had an opportunity to see how mortuary theory was applied in a real-life setting before graduation,” the program director said.

Future plans for the program include new classrooms, a restorative art lab, and a new multi-purpose chapel to be used for mock funeral services.

The ABFSE serves as the national academic accreditation agency for college and university programs in Funeral Service and Mortuary Science Education. The U.S. Department of Education and the Council on Higher Education Accreditation recognize it as the sole accrediting agency for academic programs that prepare funeral service professionals. Receiving programmatic accreditation ensures that the program has been evaluated and meets, or exceeds, set standards of quality determined by the ABFSE.

The four-year program was unveiled in 2010 and replaced the College’s two-year mortuary science program. Previously it was a candidate for accreditation through the same agency.

Some of the major changes under the new organizational structure include Athletics moving back to Student Affairs, Information Services and University Police shifting to College Administration, and Online Learning and Admissions moving under Academics.

“Canton has been a leader in SUNY’s system-wide shared service initiatives, and today’s realignment by President Schiffner mirrors our broader efforts to streamline administrative overhead so our resources can support student services and institutional priorities,” said Brian Hutzley, vice chancellor for financial services and chief financial officer for SUNY.

“These changes will result in a more effective organizational structure that will allow SUNY Canton to better address its issues and priorities moving forward,” President Schiffner said. “The restructuring of these areas will allow us to focus on student success and better align us with the model of both our SUNY counterparts and colleges and universities around the nation. This is part of the evolution of Canton as we look to continue our remarkable progress.”

Schiffner mentioned the College’s increased focus on academics and student completion as well as future opportunities to continue saving money through shared services. Last month SUNY Canton and SUNY Potsdam announced more than $1 million in shared services savings, and Vice President for Administration Natalie Higley expects those efforts to continue to benefit both schools.

“SUNY Canton and SUNY Potsdam have worked hard together to consolidate administrative services, become more efficient, and direct a larger percentage of funds toward the education of our students,” said Higley, who works for both colleges and is an example of the new shared services model. “We’ve already seen progress in areas such as payroll services and information services, and we look forward to continuing to standardize our processes and procedures for future savings.”

Lynch is a student assistant in the Registrar’s office, and hails from Long Island. He now resides in Canton.

“Andre is one of the hardest-working students I know,” said Kerrie L. Cooper, director of financial aid/ Student Service Center.  “He proves that you can do anything if you are determined.”

Each year, the association awards five scholarships to deserving undergraduate and graduate students at New York state public and private colleges. The announcement was made in October at the association’s annual conference.

“I was very surprised when I learned that I won the award,” Lynch said. “This scholarship will really help pay for my tuition in the Law Enforcement Academy at SUNY Canton next semester.”

Lynch is a senior and aspires to pursue a career in law enforcement after he graduates next spring.
