Alumni Weekend Celebrates Graduates and Distinguished Guests

SUNY Canton’s Alumni Weekend will feature two dedication ceremonies and seven new Hall of Fame inductees July 18 to 20.

“This year’s celebration is of great importance to the college,” said Director of Alumni Affairs Peggy S. Levato. “We will recognize a great alumnus, our Greek organizations and many people who have made substantial contributions to the north country community.”

The Center for Renewable Energy and Sustainable Technologies Building will be renamed in honor of one of the college’s most generous patrons at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 18. John L. Halford Sr., a 1949 graduate, has made a series of donations to the college. He most recently contributed funding for an equipment endowment in the Air Conditioning Engineering Technology program. Halford is a member of the New York State Senate Veteran’s Hall of Fame who served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.

The college’s oldest sorority has raised more than $31,000 to rename the atrium of SUNY Canton’s dining hall as part of their centennial anniversary. Pi Nu Epsilon will dedicate the space at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 19, in Chaney Dining Center. The building is named for Mary Adele Chaney, a former professor of domestic science who was instrumental in starting Pi Nu Epsilon.

Brothers from Alpha Theta Gamma, the college’s oldest fraternity, will join their sisters from Pi Nu Epsilon. The Delta Kappa Sigma fraternity and the Delta Sigma Tau sorority will be celebrating their 35th anniversaries during the weekend celebration.

The annual Hall of Fame ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. on Friday in the Miller Campus Center, Woodcock Conference Suites. The 2014 inductees are:

Thomas W. Duda taught business at SUNY Canton for 28 years. He received the Distinguished Faculty Award in 1992 and emeritus status in 2008. After retirement, he continued to teach as an adjunct until his death in 2012. Dr. Duda was very respected by his students and colleagues and he made countless educational contributions and helped many students during his tenure.

Betty J. Evans is an avid supporter of education, health care, her church and the community in the North Country. She created an endowed scholarship in 2011 to honor the memory of her son, Perry Evans. She taught 5th through 12th grade students with disabilities for 18 years.

Linda L. Fay dedicated 30 years to teaching, academic duties and administrative functions for the Nursing program. She received SUNY’s Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence in teaching and SUNY Canton’s Distinguished Faculty award. Mrs. Fay served as a role model for faculty throughout the college.

John T. Henderson, class of 1952, graduated from ATI with a degree in Drafting. He was responsible for an addition to the science building, expansion of athletic facilities, and creation of facilities master plan at Jefferson Community College. Mr. Henderson continues to support SUNY Canton.

Aaron J. and Doris H. Lasher were owners and operators of Aaron J. Lasher Plumbing and Heating in Heuvelton, New York. Mrs. Lasher established the Aaron J. Lasher Scholarship in memory of her husband. Mr. Lasher served as a volunteer firefighter, church trustee, member and chairman of various Heuvelton and Oswegatchie Boards and the scoutmaster of Heuvelton’s Boy Scout Troop nine for 23 years.

Jean M. Poticher, class of 1944, worked at Canton College for 28 years. In 1961 she served as Assistant Food Service Manager before becoming Dining Hall Manager in 1971. She was promoted to Food Service Director in 1983. She was a dedicated worker who provided outstanding service to the college.

T. Urling and Mabel B. Walker are generous contributors to the Canton College Foundation. Mrs. Walker has been active in the healthcare field and helped start Hospice in Jefferson County. Mr. Walker was one of the founding members of the Jefferson Community College Foundation in 1979. He served as mayor of Watertown from 1983 to 1991. They are well known throughout Northern New York for their philanthropic efforts.

A World War II New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame inductee continues a tradition of donating to the college.

One of SUNY Canton’s most dedicated supporters has made a donation to assist students working toward careers in his major.

Gouverneur’s John L. Halford Sr. recently established an endowment to purchase modern equipment in SUNY Canton’s Air Conditioning Engineering Technology program. Halford is a 1949 graduate who launched his own successful career based on his education.

“Careers in environmental systems continue to grow,” Halford said. “I wanted to help support students who are looking into the field.”

His contribution will be used annually to provide new tools and resources for students in the hands-on program. During the inaugural year, his contribution paid for approximately $25,000 in new technology. In subsequent years, the endowment will pay between $3,000 and $4,000 annually.

“We are genuinely proud of Mr. Halford and his commitment to the college and in the surrounding community,” said Vice President for Advancement David M. Gerlach. “He has established a tradition of giving that has spanned more than 20 years. Most importantly, he truly wants to help area students to receive the best education possible.”

While he was visiting the college, students from the SUNY Canton Veterans Association thanked Halford for his generosity by planting a tree at the main intersection on campus. Halford is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who served in World War II.

Shortly following the tree dedication ceremony, State Senator Patricia A. Ritchie announced that Halford would be inducted into the area’s Veterans Hall of Fame. He was recognized at a special ceremony held May 15 at Fort Drum. He was then inducted into the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame on May 20 at the State Capitol.

Ritchie noted Halford’s commitment to improving the lives of north country residents, especially through his work as a member of the SUNY Canton College Foundation Board of Directors. “I never expected this honor,” he humbly said.

Halford is distinctly proud of his military service. He served in the Raider Battalion that was part of the raid on Makin Island in the Pacific Theater during World War II. After his time overseas, he returned to Gouverneur, finished high school and went on to SUNY Canton, then known as the Agricultural and Technical Institute. The numerous plaques denoting his generosity at the college are inscribed with the U.S. Marine Corps seal.

In the past year, the generous benefactor sponsored two scholarships that provide 15 students with annual awards. Approximately five of those students are from Halford’s hometown.

“I hope students enjoy their time at the College and use their experience to shape their lives,” he said. “We have many good students in Gouverneur and I’d like to see them all go on to college.”

Halford holds the distinction of having the most places on SUNY Canton’s campus named in his honor. The college is home to the Halford Lobby, located at the entrance of the Faculty Office Building, the Halford Alumni Suite in the Convocation, Athletic and Recreation Center ice rink, and the Halford Classroom in the Grasse River Suites residence hall. Another building will be named in his honor during the college’s Alumni Weekend Celebration on July 18.

He is also a member of the SUNY Canton Hall of Fame and was selected as the college’s distinguished alumnus in 2011.

Longtime Hockey Coach Terry Martin Honored with Statue

SUNY Canton celebrated a phenomenal coach and a distinguished gentleman with a life-size bronze statue.

Terry L. Martin, head coach of the SUNY Canton men’s hockey program for 25 years, was honored on Saturday with the unveiling of the College’s new monument at the entryway of the college’s athletic facilities. The ceremony took place outside the doors to the ice arena of the Convocation, Athletic and Recreation Center (CARC), also known as the Roos House.

“What a humbling experience,” Martin said at the event. “But what a great day for my family, for my hockey family, my lacrosse family, my soccer family and all the faculty and staff here when I taught and coached. Seeing you all here today, former players and their families, it makes my heart feel good.”

Martin was at the helm for the Northmen and later the Northstars from 1974 to 1999, compiling a record of 527-211-29, including a 102-11-8 mark in his final four seasons. His teams won 12 national championship titles throughout his Canton College coaching career. Martin also served as men’s athletic director, women’s soccer coach, men’s lacrosse coach, and taught in the physical education department.

The statue came to fruition through the vision and generosity of alumnus Richard F. Layo, who played for the Northmen from 1974-76. He has remained active since he graduated from SUNY Canton, attending alumni events and maintaining correspondence with the Office of Alumni Affairs.

“You always hear ‘Terry Martin, what a great coach!’” Layo said. “Terry Martin is a great man. I think that’s something that speaks louder than just a great coach. His level of dedication was humbling to me as a freshman. His passion for the game is like no one else I’ve ever seen. He continually builds character in every hockey player he works with.”

They provide state-of-the-art die/mold machine solutions for a broad base of North American companies.

SUNY Canton Acting President Joseph Hoffman also spoke at the event along with Canton Town Supervisor Dave Button and long-time Professor and Canton Town Board Member Dan Fay. Button and Fay presented a Town Board resolution honoring Martin’s extraordinary accomplishments and service to the college and community.

The SUNY Canton Foundation and Alumni Offices welcomed more than 100 alumni, friends and guests to campus this weekend for ‘Terry Martin Weekend,’ including Northmen Night during Friday’s hockey game.

“It was a great weekend honoring Terry,” said Vice President for Advancement Dave Gerlach. “He deserves this type of recognition. And his former players showed how much he means to them by traveling from all over North America to be in attendance at the unveiling.”

Middle States Commission on Higher Education Reaccredits SUNY Canton and Notes Exceptional Educational Offerings, Growth and Innovation

SUNY Canton LogoSUNY Canton recently completed a two-year long institution-wide self-study and peer review process resulting in the College’s reaccreditation. The positive reaccreditation report from Middle States peer reviewers included commendations for many recent educational accomplishments at the College.

“I am extremely proud of the efforts the entire SUNY Canton community put into the College’s reaccreditation,” said SUNY Canton Acting President Joseph C. Hoffman. “The process and the Middle States report demonstrates how strong the College is, and highlights the quality of the education and services we provide to our students.”

The Middle States Commission on Higher Education recently completed its ten-year review of the College, with the peer review report summarizing how SUNY Canton meets its goals and objectives while guided by an established mission and core set of values. The College-wide mission is to provide a progression of accessible, affordable, high-quality applied programs that enable students in the North Country, New York State and beyond to achieve their highest potential both personally and professionally.

“More than 100 faculty, staff and students were involved in the multi-year process that led to our successful reaccreditation,” said Jondavid S. DeLong, dean of the school of business and liberal arts and the self-study steering committee chair. “The College met or exceeded all 14 characteristics of excellence in higher education established by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education for institutional reaccreditation.”

The self-study and peer review process confirmed that the College continues its tradition of providing an excellent educational experience for students, according to DeLong.

Among the departments praised by the Middle States peer evaluation team was Student Affairs, which was noted for maintaining a high level of student service and promoting significant student engagement. Included in the division is the Southworth Library Learning Commons, which houses Information Services and the majority of the College’s tutoring services. The library was lauded for offering extensive and innovative services that support and enhance educational offerings and academic programming.

The team of reviewers commended the development of credit and non-credit programs directly tied to community needs. The Middle States reviewers also praised the College’s signature Summer and Winterterm sessions, which have experienced dramatic growth in recent years by switching to a primarily online format.

The College received commendation for the creative financing that allowed the Alumni Association and the SUNY Canton College Foundation to construct the Grasse River Suites Residence Hall. It was also lauded for creating an institutional scorecard, which ties together the goals, plans, objectives and budgets of each College department.

The Middle States Commission on Higher Education is a voluntary, non-governmental, membership association that is dedicated to quality assurance and improvement through accreditation via peer evaluation. Middle States accreditation instills public confidence in institutional mission, goals, performance and resources through its rigorous accreditation standards and their enforcement. The self-study process is ongoing and linked to overall planning. The College will submit a progress report in 2015 and will undergo its next periodic review in 2018.

SUNY Canton Commits $25,000 Scholarship For Claxton-Hepburn Employees

Claxton HepburnIn support of Claxton-Hepburn’s next capital campaign, the SUNY Canton College Foundation has generously committed $25,000 in scholarship support to assist Claxton-Hepburn employees seeking a SUNY Canton Nursing or Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. This scholarship was established to encourage CHMC employees to continue their education and pursue higher levels of training in order to provide the highest level of care to the community.

Each fall for five years, five Claxton-Hepburn employees will be selected through an application process for a $1,000 scholarship to help them with tuition and other applicable educational expenses while pursuing a two- or four-year nursing degree. David Ferris, Chief Nursing Officer at Claxton-Hepburn, who received his Nursing degree at SUNY Canton in 1984 and teaches in the program today, commented “We are fortunate to have SUNY Canton’s nursing programs in our community. This scholarship program is a wonderful opportunity for our staff and we are excited to work with SUNY Canton.”

Since 1902 when the A. Barton Hepburn Nursing School was founded, and later through work with SUNY Canton, Claxton-Hepburn has been committed throughout its history to high-quality local nursing education. Claxton-Hepburn provides clinical experiences for SUNY Canton nursing students, and later employs many of them. The medical center also has a tuition reimbursement program for employees who return to seek higher degrees while employed. Claxton-Hepburn’s long connection with the SUNY Canton Nursing program also includes the service of Linda Fay, Professor Emeriti of Nursing at SUNY Canton (1972-2005), who is on the Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center and the Claxton-Hepburn Health System boards.

Canton College Foundation Establishes Scholarship for Hospital

In response to the Canton-Potsdam Hospital Foundation’s “Constructing Healthier Communities” campaign, the Canton College Foundation has established a $25,000 scholarship fund to assist graduate nurses employed at the Hospital.  The fund will provide scholarships for the next five years, to Hospital employees who already have their two-year RN degree, and are pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing.

“We have many excellent nurses on staff who are graduates of SUNY Canton’s RN program,” noted Hospital President and CEO David B. Acker.  “As the nursing profession has advanced, new standards of care require advanced training.  SUNY Canton’s online graduate nursing program is a perfect fit for our staff, enabling them to pursue their degree while working.”

The first two scholarship recipients are Tammy Sykes, Nurse Manager in the Hospital’s Emergency Department; and TerriAnn Crump, nurse in inpatient Chemical Dependency Rehab. Both nurses received their RN training at SUNY Canton.

With the Canton College Foundation’s commitment, gifts, grants and pledges to the Hospital Foundation’s “Constructing Healthier Communities” campaign have topped $3 million.  “We are gratified that we found such meaningful way to be a part of the Hospital’s campaign,” noted SUNY Canton Vice President for Advancement David Gerlach.  “This is just one more example of how our two institutions can partner creatively.”

SUNY Canton Foundation Awards $30,000 for Campus Enhancements

Mary Karr, author of award-winning memoirs, was one of the previous guest speakers at SUNY Canton’s Living Writers Series. The series will be funded through the College Foundation this spring.

The SUNY Canton College Foundation recently announced the recipients of the 7th annual Campus Enhancement Awards.

“These projects are made possible through unrestricted donations, which are an important resource the College utilizes to fund creative and innovative projects that benefit our community,” said Vice President for Advancement and Executive Director of the SUNY Canton College Foundation David M. Gerlach. “We are extremely grateful to all of the donors who have supported the Foundation.”

Some unrestricted donations come directly from SUNY Canton faculty and staff members. Last year, more than 230 employees donated approximately $60,000 to the Foundation via payroll deductions.

Among this year’s Campus Enhancement Awards are:

  • The Living Writers lecture series during the spring semester.
  • Instructional software for nursing students.
  • A professional practice field trip for students in the graphic and multimedia design program.
  • Healthy lifestyle training programs.
  • A student field trip to the United Nations building in New York City.
  • Funds for students to attend the 2013 Regional Steel Bridge Competition.
  • New equipment and other upgrades to the student resource library.
  • Problem-solving software for engineering students.

In addition to the annual Campus Enhancement Awards, the College Foundation also funds student scholarships, professional development opportunities for faculty and staff, and unique learning and research fellowships.

A retired St. Lawrence Central teacher inspired community service and generosity for a new generation of students at SUNY Canton’s annual Scholarship Luncheon.

William D. Demo, a graduate of the class of 1957, and the recipient of the 2012 Distinguished Alumnus Award and Hall of Fame inductee said that scholarship sponsors believe deeply in the quality of a SUNY Canton education.

“I too was the recipient of a scholarship while I was studying here,” Demo recalled. “I deeply appreciated that scholarship then, and I hope that you cherish yours today.”

Demo is a member of the SUNY Canton College Foundation Board of Directors and created the Bill and Kathleen Demo Scholarship, awarded to two students from St. Lawrence Central School.

Nearly 350 students received scholarships or awards at SUNY Canton this year. The College Foundation awards nearly $450,000 annually for student support.

“Your sponsors and I believe in you and the future you represent,” Demo said to the collected students at the luncheon. “You are our investment in SUNY Canton, the area, and world. Your commitment to others will make our world and our College a better place. I hope you will follow in the footsteps of your sponsors and will want to help future students accomplish their goals.”

SUNY Canton Interim President Carli C. Schiffner complimented the Demo family’s commitment to education. “Mr. and Mrs. Demo have dedicated their lives to the success of North Country scholars, through their scholarship and their teaching careers,” she said. “On behalf of SUNY Canton, I thank you for your support.”

Demo won the Brasher-Winthrop firefighter of the year award in 1994. He was the first town of Brasher Parade Marshall to in 2004, recognizing his community service. In 2008 received the Quad-Town Lion’s Club first-ever Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, the highest form of recognition given to acknowledge his dedication to humanitarian services, an award presented through the Lion’s Club’s International Foundation. He was also named Quad Town Lion of the year for his community service in 2009

Among his other accolades, he was named the St. Lawrence County Senior Citizen of the year at the St. Lawrence County Council of Senior Citizens Annual Festival in 2005. He is a life-long member of St. Patrick’s Church and Parish in Brasher Falls has served on the Parish Council, and has chaired numerous fundraising efforts. He was the co-recipient of the 2011 Betsey Kaplan Award for his years of dedicated service as a Town of Brasher councilmember.

Demo, who is now retired, owned and operated an auctioneering and appraisal service.

SUNY Canton Partners with Subaru in a Public – Private Partnership

Subaru Distributors Corporation has made SUNY Canton its newest corporate training center.

The announcement was made today (Thursday, August 23) at an open house celebration. Subaru and area dealers will be contributing approximately $500,000 in tools, diagnostic equipment, and brand new cars to the College over the next five years to facilitate the partnership.

“SUNY Canton exemplifies the ‘Power of SUNY’ and how we can work with distinguished private sector partners like Subaru to boost economic opportunities across the state,” said SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher in a letter to the College. “I commend Subaru Distributors Corp. and North Country Subaru Dealers for recognizing the strength of the SUNY system and SUNY Canton’s state-of-the-art and newly renovated Automotive Laboratory.”

Through the new partnership, automotive technology students can become certified to work with Subaru. Additionally, a third of the Subaru dealers in New York can send their technicians for training at SUNY Canton, saving the company money on travel to more distant training centers.

“The SUNY Canton Subaru Training Center will be an inspiration for our automotive technology students and will be an example of the value of our partnerships for other corporations,” said Interim SUNY Canton President Carli C. Schiffner. “The training center will significantly impact our students’ educational opportunities, as well as increase the prestige of our automotive technology program.”

The partnership was first formed when Brandon J. Baldwin, an assistant professor in the automotive program was introduced to Barry A. Wells, executive vice president of Subaru Distributors Corp. Wells graduated from SUNY Canton in 1975, and earned a second degree from the College in 2010.

According to Baldwin, students who complete the training will be exposed to the latest in automotive technology. “Subaru will give them an added edge as they begin their career search,” he said.

Wells pointed out that the collaboration is a great investment from Subaru’s perspective, because students who complete the training and go on to work for the company will already have the specific skills needed, saving dealerships thousands of dollars.

The surprise announcement of the new public-private partnership in SUNY Canton’s Automotive Laboratories drew more than 50 guests. The labs were packed with the latest model Subaru vehicles.

“This is also another outstanding partnership between alumni and SUNY Canton,” said SUNY Canton Vice President for Advancement David M. Gerlach. “The power of our successful alumni reaching out to assist our community and our current and future students is profound and deeply appreciated.”

Dealerships in attendance included, Barstow Subaru in Potsdam, Fuccillo Subaru in Watertown, and Bill McBride Subaru in Plattsburgh.

Major Automotive Partnership to Begin August 23 at SUNY Canton

SUNY Canton will be partnering with a major car manufacturer to provide advanced training and certification opportunities for automotive technology students.

The College will announce the details of the new public-private partnership at 10 a.m. Thursday (August 23) in the Automotive Technology lab (room 124) in Nevaldine Technology Center. The event is free and open to the public.

“The partnership will give our students an additional edge as they seek employment after graduating from SUNY Canton’s program,” noted Interim SUNY Canton President Carli C. Schiffner. “We certainly want to thank the manufacturer and the dealers who have made a fantastic opportunity available to our students.”

In addition to certification, students will also have access to three brand-new cars and specialized tools, according to Brandon J. Baldwin, an assistant professor in the automotive technology program. Baldwin sought out this partnership alongside the SUNY Canton College Foundation.

“We provide our students with the latest tools and diagnostic equipment available,” Baldwin said. “Our new partnership takes their education to an even higher level with specialized industry-specific certification.”

The automotive program also recently became a Snap-On Tools Diagnostic Training Center. It is the only designated training center in New York, and one of only about 20 in the United States.

Previously, students in the motorsports performance program have benefitted from a similar partnership with Polaris Industries Inc. Students learn their profession with some of the latest vehicles made by Polaris, and the company hosts specialty training sessions at the College.
