Vacancies Dwindling at SUNY Canton Residence Halls

Friday, August 1st, 2008

CANTON – As residence halls approach capacity, SUNY Canton officials are turning toward local landlords to assist in providing additional student housing options for the upcoming semester. Director of Residence Life Courtney Battista is asking Canton landlords interested in renting to students to contact her at 386-7513 or email their information to reslife@canton.edu.

“This has been the highest demand for housing in recent memory,” Battista said. “We are annually at or near capacity, but this year has been exceptional.”

SUNY Canton’s four residence halls house approximately 1000 students. Battista sites a large incoming class of first-year students as well as a higher than usual number of transfer and continuing students.

“As our four-year programs continue to grow, our demand for housing has similarly increased,” said President Joseph L. Kennedy. “Students are living on campus longer and our incoming first-year students want the experience of college life on campus.”

Popular residence hall options include the Grasse River Community, which allows students to bring small-caged animals with them to the dorms, and the new Go-Green Community, which is reserved for students who are looking for ways to improve the environment.

Students will begin moving into residence halls on Saturday, August 23. Convocation will be held on Monday, August 25 at 10:00 a.m. Classes begin at SUNY Canton on Tuesday, August 26.

SUNY Canton offers rolling admissions in many programs, so students continue to apply and become accepted for the upcoming semester. Prospective students interested in enrolling for the Fall Semester should contact the admissions office at admissions@canton.edu, 386-7123 or 800-388-7123.

Increases in first-year applications, transfers, continuing students and returning students are likely to generate the largest enrollment in the history of SUNY Canton this fall.

The school recorded its highest enrollment in 32 years last year and the second highest in school history. SUNY Canton’s all-time highest enrollment was 2,833 during the 1975-76 academic year. That number is likely to be surpassed this fall.

Last fall, 2,776 students enrolled for the 2007-08 academic year, an increase of 158 students from the 2006-07 academic year. College officials are anticipating even more growth with the possibility of reaching 3,000 students in 2008-09 for the first time ever.
