“Upon graduation, you will have opportunities to take risks,” SUNY Canton Interim President Carli C. Schiffner said to the 2013 graduating class. “Make new connections and consider moving from familiar surroundings and landscapes. This is an exciting beginning — go for it. Don’t be idle.”

This will be Schiffner’s final commencement at SUNY Canton. She will step down May 31 to become vice president of instruction at Wenatchee Valley College in Washington State. Joseph C. Hoffman will begin his tenure as SUNY Canton acting president June 1.

Throughout my time at SUNY Canton many people have played a part in the person I am today.”

Johnson presented the annual Northstar Award to Assistant Professor Christa K. Kelson. This award is determined by the student body to recognize a faculty or staff member. Kelson teaches accounting and was selected for her kindness and helpfulness as a faculty member and adviser. She is an avid supporter of student activities and athletics.

Sorority and fraternity members help prepare and serve the food, and according to the Rev. Evette E. Austin, Grace Episcopal’s priest, their contributions extend beyond the kitchen.

“The students are very helpful and kind to everyone,” Austin said. “They take the time to assist the elderly and make them feel comfortable here.

Austin, who is also a SUNY Canton campus minister, said another part of the students’ responsibilities is to prepare take-home meals for the guests.

Martyna M. Crisafulli, a Law Enforcement Leadership major from Albany and member of Kappa Xi Omega sorority, said that she enjoys volunteering at the church.

“The best part about working here is being able to interact with the community members,” she said.

In addition to student volunteers, SUNY Canton’s Greek Council donates funding to purchase ingredients for the meals. The council raised approximately $700 for the Soup Kitchen and the Church and Community Program Food Pantry in Canton.

Dr. Schiffner said Dr. Hoffman was an exceptional choice to lead SUNY Canton into the future.

“We’re delighted and excited to have Dr. Hoffman join the SUNY Canton community,” Dr. Schiffner said. “With his background at SUNY and his familiarity within the colleges of technology sector, Dr. Hoffman will be able to make an easy transition to SUNY Canton and will no doubt be successful.”

Mydosh from Warwick received the SUNY Canton Outstanding
Associate Graduate Award.

Megan M. Mydosh, a Business Administration major from Warwick, was the recipient of the annual Outstanding Associate Graduate Award, which recognizes students enrolled in two-year programs who have excelled in their academics and other areas of campus life.

Mydosh was named each semester to the President’s List, the College’s highest level of achievement that honors full-time students who earn a semester grade point average (GPA) of 3.75 or higher on a 4.0 scale. She is also a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and was captain of the women’s cross-country team for two years.

In addition to being an outstanding student, her peers, professors and coaches describe her as a dedicated leader who excels at motivating others.

“Megan stands out as one of the most hardworking and motivated young women I have had the pleasure of knowing,” said SUNY Canton’s Women’s Cross Country Head Coach Kathryn Kennedy. “She is a true leader who expects hard work and commitment from her teammates and models the same behavior on a regular basis.”

Mydosh plans to continue her studies at SUNY Canton and earn a bachelor’s degree in Management.

“I’m so thankful to have been chosen to receive the Outstanding Graduate Award,” said Mydosh. “SUNY Canton gives everyone the opportunity to do their best, and I’m happy that I have been able to take advantage of all the resources the College offers to students.”

Smith from Lisbon received the SUNY Canton Outstanding
Baccalaureate Graduate Award.

There are a select few students who can add overseas missionary work and business ownership to their college resume. Zachary J. Smith, an Industrial Technology major from Lisbon, designed, engineered, managed and led the construction of a $60,000 primary school and training facility in South Sudan.

“My adviser thought the project would fit well with my academic pursuits,” Smith said. “So I dropped my scheduled Spring 2012 classes and worked in Central Africa.”

Smith was selected as the College’s Outstanding Baccalaureate Graduate, in partial acknowledgement of his outstanding missionary work. He was also the vice president of the Campus Ministries club and received a certificate of appreciation for his volunteer work from the Christian Fellowship Center in Madrid.

“Zach’s phenomenal mind gave him the extraordinary power to love and serve more people than most normally would,” said Yu Chin Cheng, an assistant professor and Smith’s adviser. “He is intelligent, diligent and honest. He always has a smile on his face. It has been an honor to be his academic adviser.”

He started college with the goal of graduating with a triple major. He has earned two associate degrees, one in Construction Technology Management and another in Business Administration. He will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Technology Management. Smith has accomplished this remarkable achievement while maintaining a 3.77 GPA.

After earning his Construction Technology Management degree, he started his own construction and contracting business. He attributes his ability to start Z&S Construction directly back to the skills he learned in the degree. “It has been my primary means of income since I started the business in 2011,” he said.

The SUNY Canton student steel bridge team once again earned a first-place finish at the 2013 American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Upstate New York Student Conference Championships held at the Rochester Institute of Technology.

This is the 14th time in 17 years that SUNY Canton’s ASCE student chapter has captured the regional title, and their win earns them a spot in the national intercollegiate contest to be held next month at the University of Washington in Seattle, where they will compete against some of the most prestigious schools in the country.

SUNY Canton steel bridge team members Alyssa M.
“The entire SUNY Canton community is extremely proud of the steel bridge team’s achievement at the regional competition,” said Interim President Carli C.
Co-sponsored by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), the contest challenges future engineers to display their skills in design, fabrication and teamwork by building a one-tenth scale model bridge to meet certain criteria, such as construction speed, lightness and economy. The team completed the construction in 5 minutes and 15 seconds and earned first place in the regional event’s speed subcategory. The team also placed in three other categories:

Second place in lightness

Second place in construction economy

Third place in structural efficiency

“The students gave up their spring break to prepare for competition,” said Paul D. Hitchman, an instructional support associate and faculty adviser for the team.

Hitchman and co-adviser Dennis E. Tuper help to raise the necessary funds needed to cover the travel and lodging expenses for the team, which are significantly higher than in year’s past due to the national competition’s location. Anyone wishing to make a contribution to the team may contact the SUNY Canton College Foundation at 315-386-7127, 800-811-6727, or email foundation@canton.edu.

Registration is now open for SUNY Canton’s popular Summer Session, which begins June 3.

More than 100 online courses and several on-campus classes will be offered throughout three sessions: June 3 to July 28, June 3 to July 7 and July 8 to Aug. 11. Courses are accessible via computer anywhere in the world, offering local students and distance-learners the flexibility of earning college credit via the Internet.

“Our online courses offer the same high-quality education that SUNY Canton is known for, but in a flexible learning environment,” said SUNY Canton’s Director of Information Services and OnLine Learning Kyle Brown. “Students from SUNY Canton and across the country continue to utilize our Summer Session course offerings year after year.”

Although courses are available in a number of disciplines, General Education classes have traditionally been in the highest demand over the past several years, especially from students at other colleges and universities.

“Due to the fact that these courses are most easily transferable to a student’s home institution, we anticipate that they will fill up quickly,” Brown added.

Because taking online courses can help satisfy a number of degree requirements at other SUNY schools, they help support SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher’s commitment to ensuring student success by allowing a seamless transfer of credits across campuses.

Summer courses also help students get ahead and graduate early, or stay on track and graduate on time, which also supports SUNY’s strategic plan.
