Matthew J. Wissman of Forestburgh, who is graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in criminal investigation, recently received his award at the recent Faye White Honors Convocation.

“He’s the student that I can always count on to step up and help out,” said Elizabeth A. Erickson, an assistant professor in the criminal investigation program. “He’s really outgoing and happy to be a leader; I hate to see him leave us.”

SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy presented him with a ceremonial medallion to adorn his academic regalia for SUNY Canton’s 104th Commencement Ceremony to be held 10 a.m. Saturday, May 19, in the field house portion of the Convocation Athletic and Recreation Center, (nicknamed Roos House). Nearly 900 students are eligible to participate in Commencement.

Wissman is Senior Resident Assistant at the brand-new Grasse River Suites residence hall. He has demonstrated impeccable maturity and responsibility, according to Kristen B. Roberts, associate director of residence life and the 2012 Northstar Award Recipient.

“Matthew treats everyone with fairness and respect, and encourages others to do the same,” Roberts said. “He’s always one step ahead and proactively addresses issues before they arise.”

He’s been an active volunteer at events on campus and in the community; he worked with children in an after school program at Ogdensburg Free Academy, and participated in a career day at Gouverneur Central High School.

Mr. Wissman is the Vice President for the Criminal Justice Student Association and Secretary for the SUNY Canton chapter of the American Criminal Justice Honor Society. He is an active runner and a member of the men’s cross-country team. Wissman recently volunteered with the President’s 5K Run/Walk challenge, and previously helped out with the annual Nicole Fleury 5K race. He’s been on both the President’s and Deans’ Lists for his outstanding academic achievement and is a member of the College’s chapter of the Golden Key Honor Society.

Britney G. Livingston, a liberal arts major from Lisbon and Kenneth A. Burwell, a bachelor of science – nursing major, from Canton both recently received this award in person from SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher.

“The students we honor today have taken full advantage of the academic and extracurricular programs that SUNY provides both in the classroom and in the community,” said Zimpher.

Livingston was recognized for her ongoing commitment to the College and extensive support of the Student Activities Offices programs. She is the vice president for the SUNY Canton chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, a recipient of two scholarships created by Distinguished Alumnus John L. Halford of Gouverneur and a recipient of the Perry Family Scholarship.

“Britney is an excellent student,” said Patrick LaPierre, an associate professor of history, who has worked with Livingston in the past. “She takes her work seriously and she displays traits that bode well for her future success. She is an active steward of her educational future. She represents the Chancellor’s Award with distinction.”

Additionally, she is a representative for the Student Government Association, a member of SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy’s Student Ambassador committee, a member of the Intercollegiate Athletics Board, and has been an orientation leader. She’s made both the deans’ and president’s list for her academic success.

Burwell was recognized for his academic excellence and his work with several departments and offices on campus. He is a member of SUNY Canton’s chapter of the Golden Key Honor Society for four-year students, has worked with the College’s Upward Bound program, and is a student assistant in the Davis Health Center.

Kennedy will be promoting health and fitness by hosting and running in the second President’s 5K Run/Walk Challenge.

The “5K with Dr. K” will begin at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 10, near the College’s turf field next to the Roos House Athletic Center. The course will include the scenic cross-country trails bordering the Grasse River. The race and the walk are free and open to the public, but pre-registration is strongly encouraged.

“There are a number of ways we encourage healthy lifestyles on campus,” Kennedy said. “We have spinning classes in our brand-new fitness center, healthy food options, and we are moving toward a tobacco free environment. Of everything we do, this race is my favorite event to promote fitness on campus and in our community.”

The first 25 registrants will receive a free t-shirt. Registration is available online at: http://www.canton.edu/challenge/

Kennedy is an avid runner who participates in numerous community-sponsored races.

Last year, the inaugural “5K with Dr. K” attracted approximately 120 runners and walkers from both the College and the area. On campus, the race has inspired good-natured rivalry among faculty, staff, and students.

Corbine of Potsdam (far right) tightens the final bolts on the College's bridge during the assembly stage of the competition.

The College hosted the bridge portion of the competition on Friday at the brand new Roos House Athletic Center. It was the 13th time in 17 years that SUNY Canton students have captured the regional title.

“Congratulations to our student steel bridge team for their regional victory and good luck to them in the nationals,” said SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy. “I’m very proud of the time and energy they’ve poured into designing and making their bridge. I’m also extremely proud of all the work the team did to make hosting the competition such a great success. I’m certain that these experiences and successes will serve them well as they prepare for successful careers.”

The competition challenges student teams to construct a one-tenth-scale model bridge designed to meet certain criteria, including construction speed, lightness, display, stiffness, economy, and efficiency.

“The students made all of the right choices from the beginning to make this bridge the winning entry,” said Robert R. Blickwedehl, a College instructor and SUNY Canton ASCE student chapter advisor. “I look forward to seeing them compete against top colleges and universities in the nation once again this year.”

The team will now prepare to head to the ASCE/AISC national competition scheduled for May 25 at Clemson University in South Carolina.

The judges use a formula to project how much implementation of each entry would cost, and the total cost determines the winning entry. The SUNY Canton bridge entry would cost an estimated $4.3 million and took just under eight minutes to construct. It was approximately $1.8 million cheaper and was assembled eight minutes faster than the nearest rival entry from second-place winner École de Technologie Supérieure (ETS) from Montreal, Quebec.

In order of finish, after the SUNY Canton and ETS entries were:

Cornell University

Clarkson University

SUNY at Buffalo

Hudson Valley Community College

The United States Military Academy at West Point

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

Rochester Institute of Technology

“This was the best regional competition that we’ve been to as far as I can remember,” said Paul D. Hitchman, a faculty advisor for the student steel bridge team. “I can’t thank the faculty, staff, students and administration enough for helping us make the event a tremendous success.”

From 10 am. To 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 28, the Roos House Athletic Center ice rink and field house will be home to unique, classic, new, and custom motor vehicles. Event organizer and SUNY Canton Assistant Professor Brandon J. Baldwin said the event is one of the only indoor car shows in the area.

“We’ve invited local and national vendors and scheduled live music for the event,” Baldwin said. “There will be lots of great cars inside one of the coolest new buildings on campus.”

Entry fees are $5 for adults, $3 for youth, and children 13 and under can attend for free.

“We have interlocking tiles that we place over the ice rink for this type of event,” said Roos House Director of Operations John D. Vandevere. “We are able to accommodate multiple or large-scale events at the venue by offering the ice rink as a useable space other than for skating.”

Individuals wishing to display a car must preregister and be on-sight before 10 a.m. For more information, or to register, please contact the SUNY Canton Roos House Athletic Center at (315) 386-7051.

The 2012 SUNY Canton Honors Convocation has been named after Distinguished Professor Emerita Faye W. White of Ogdensburg.

“Professor White’s commitment to students and learning is an extension of who she is and all that she loves,” said SUNY Canton Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Carli C. Schiffner. “It is extremely apt that we link her name with a ceremony honoring the pinnacle of student success.”

According to Schiffner, the recognition and awards committee unanimously recommended White for this honor. She is well known for her highly valuable contributions to the Math department, the College and community. She was also considered a conscientious faculty member who maintained a strong connection with her students.

“Standing in the ranks with Art Hurlbut, Harriet Beggs, and Herm Kalberer is a wonderful honor,” White said, in reference to several of the previous faculty recognized at honors convocation. “SUNY Canton is a great college for students and it’s a great place to teach.”

The former math professor received the SUNY Canton Distinguished Faculty Award in 2001 and was awarded emeritus status the same year, denoting her excellence during her 15-year career at the College. Faye also received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Heuvelton Central School in 2001.

Faye was a member of the New York State Mathematics Association for Two-Year Colleges. She served on numerous campus governance committees during her tenure, including the intercollegiate athletic board. She was also the division representative to the College Association, Inc. White returned to teach after her retirement.

White graduated from SUNY Potsdam with three degrees: a Bachelor of Arts degree in Secondary Mathematics in 1968; a Master’s degree in Education in Secondary Mathematics in 1971; and a Master’s degree in Education in Instructional Technology and Media Management in 1993. She taught at Davisville Junior High and Morristown Central School until joining the SUNY Canton faculty as a Math Instructor in 1986.

White of Ogdensburg tutors Wayne A. Brown of Heuvelton. White’s continuing love of education led SUNY Canton to name the 2012 Honors Convocation in her honor.

She has been an active member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and was instrumental in the organization of the Professional Clothing Fair, which is held annually at SUNY Canton. She also coordinates the St. Lawrence County AAUW “Open Windows for Girls” program. Since her retirement, Faye has remained active in the community by tutoring students and serving as a Eucharistic Minister at Notre Dame Church and at the Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center.

White lives in Ogdensburg with her husband, Eugene. They have a daughter, Kristen, who lives in Sebastopol, California. She enjoys reading, tutoring, gardening, traveling and spending time with her family.

The Faye W. White Honors Convocation will be held at 4:15 p.m. May 2, at SUNY Canton’s Roos House Athletic Center Field House. The event is free and open to the public. Students receiving awards will be listed in a later release posted at www.canton.edu.

SUNY Canton and Clarkson University are cohosting the three-day American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Upstate New York Student Conference, featuring the Upstate Regional Student Steel Bridge Competition.

SUNY Canton ASCE Chapter members Briana K. Fosher of Rouses Point, Mike J. Muller, Jr., of Canton, and William W. Corbine of Potsdam, assemble their team's steel bridge during a practice run.

SUNY Canton’s ASCE student chapter has traditionally dominated the competition by annually planning, designing, and building a bridge that is stronger and more efficient than all of the other colleges and universities in the Northeast. The steel bridge portion of the conference begins at 8:30 a.m. Friday, April 20, at SUNY Canton’s Roos House Athletic Center Ice Rink.

“This is the first time we’ve ever hosted an ASCE conference at SUNY Canton,” said Paul D. Hitchman, one of the faculty advisors for the student steel bridge club. “Our new Roos House building will provide a great venue for the event.”

The competition portions of the conference are free and open to the public, and the bridge team anticipates many fans and onlookers at the event.

“This year’s challenge is to build a cantilever bridge from a man-made dam,” said SUNY Canton ASCE student chapter president Daniel R. Jones of Canton. “Our bridge is very different and more complicated than in previous years, but we’ve been practicing extensively.”

The SUNY Canton steel bridge team has won the regional championships a remarkable 12 times in 16 years and accrued a national championship title in 2009. Other colleges and universities competing include the University at Buffalo, Rochester Institute of Technology, Cornell University, U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Ecole de Technologie Superieure, Hudson Valley Community College, and Clarkson University.

“We begin designing and planning for this competition on the first day of the fall semester, or almost eight months in advance,” said ASCE student chapter vice president and bridge designer William W. Corbine of Potsdam. “I like to think we have an advantage over other larger schools in the competition because we build our bridge on-site and then practice until we can build it fast and efficiently.”

Corbine and Jones are both seniors in SUNY Canton’s civil and environmental technology program.

The SUNY Canton Alumni office is hosting a reception for former team members and other graduates who want to be involved with the regional conference. The special RSVP only event will begin at 10 a.m. Friday, April 20, in the mezzanine area overlooking the ice rink.

The mission of the Student Steel Bridge Competition is to supplement the education of students in the technology and engineering fields, with a student-driven project.
