Hurricane Sandy – Campus Storm Update
Update Tuesday, October 30 – 6:15 am
The effects of Hurricane Sandy on campus have been minimal. Classes will be conducted today as scheduled.
Please use caution when travelling and walking around campus. The forecast calls for wind and rain to continue today.
Update Monday, October 29 – 10:00 pm
Tuesday Classes: If we have power on campus in the morning, we’ll likely have classes. If we don’t have power, we will cancel classes. We will update you again in the morning. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
Residence Hall Students:
- Remain indoors
- Close and lock all windows
- Keep cell phones charged
In the event of a Power Outage:
Backup generator power is usually available to the residence halls within 1-2 hours. To reduce electrical load on generators please unplug non-essential items (especially refrigerators). Never use candles or lanterns in the residence halls (flashlights only). The card access system does not work when the power is down, so please avoid leaving your building or suite during a power outage.
In the event of a Fire Alarm Activation:
- Evacuate the building as usual
- Bring warm clothing, college ID and cell phone
- Proceed to a neighboring residence hall to get out of the wind and rain
Communication:
Contact University Police at 315-386-7777 if there is an emergency. Please do NOT contact University Police for general information. The SUNY Canton website will be updated as information becomes available. If you have questions or concerns please talk to your RA or the RA on duty.
Counseling Services:
Counselors from the College Counseling Center remain on call. Those who feel they are in need of counseling, please contact University Police at 386-7777.
Online, non-residential students:
We understand that for some there is the potential for the outages to be extended and widespread, making the submission of course work impossible. However, until we know the extent of the storm’s impact, we cannot determine an appropriate course of action for online non-residential students.
We advise students to continue with what work they can. Keeping up with the reading, having assignments ready and studying for upcoming tests will make it that much easier to get back on track. If possible, students should email their faculty for course specific details.

Travel Safely: Hurricane Sandy is a major storm. Please use an abundance of caution when travelling and be safe.
Other Operations: The Campus Store will remain open normal evening hours should students need any supplies, etc. The Roo Shuttle will run through this afternoon, but it will not run this evening based on the forecasted winds. If students have a question regarding the Roos Shuttle, please ask an R.D. or call 386-7623.
Commuter Students: We haven’t forgotten about you. Expectations regarding class attendance are the same for commuter students as on-campus students. All decisions regarding classes take into account that more than half of our students are commuter students. We are thinking of you when we decide whether or not to cancel classes.
Faculty/Staff questions: Faculty and staff concerned about travel to and from work should consult with their appropriate supervisors. As always with inclement weather, we encourage you to use discretion and be cautious. Supervisors should be in touch with the appropriate Vice Presidents to ensure accurate information is communicated.
Massive Power Outage Potential: Hurricane Sandy brings the potential of a massive power outage. We will do our best to communicate whether classes and/or activities are cancelled or postponed. Please check www.canton.edu for the latest information. We will also be disseminating information through our SUNY Canton facebook page and Twitter. If there is a massive power outage with long term potential, we will likely also send out a NYAlert so information can be received via text. As is always the case with situations such as these, we will use our best collective judgment regarding which course of action to take and how to communicate those decisions.
Windows: Please be sure to close and lock all windows, particularly in offices and rooms that could potentially be left unattended for any amount of time.
Cell Phones and Computers: We advise trying to keep the batteries in cell phones and computers fully charged. That way in case of a power outage you will be able to receive communications for a longer period of time.
University Police: Just a reminder in case of an emergency or injury, the University Police phone number is 386-7777.
Updates: We will be periodically updating you with information as needed over the next several days. Again, the best source for these updates will be www.canton.edu.
