				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The St. Lawrence County Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) is giving its annual scholarship in remembrance of SUNY Canton Librarian Mary L. Bucher.</p>
<p>Bucher was a 34-year employee of the College who passed away last spring. She was much revered for her wisdom and helpful nature. She was also the presidentially appointed College Archivist. Bucher was an active and dedicated member of the St. Lawrence County Branch of AAUW, and was the chair of the committee for the chapter’s scholarship.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.canton.edu/news/index.php/2012/06/bucher/mary_bucher/" rel="attachment wp-att-3296"><img class="alignleft  wp-image-3296" style="margin: 10px;" alt="Mary Bucher" src="http://www.canton.edu/news/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Mary_Bucher.jpg" width="216" height="320" /></a>The scholarship is awarded to a female SUNY Canton student from St. Lawrence County through the SUNY Canton Foundation. Criteria for the scholarship include the submission of a 500 to 700-word essay, explaining the applicant’s future educational goals, career ambitions, and outlining their service to the community. The recipient must be planning to transfer into a four-year academic program. Preference will be given to non-traditional women who show leadership and community service potential who plan to pursue a degree in one of the science, technology, engineering or mathematic (STEM) fields.</p>
<p>Applications must be sent Betty Connolly, Assistant Vice President for Administration and Affirmative Action Officer for SUNY Canton, 34 Cornell Drive, Canton, N.Y., 13617. The deadline for receiving applications is 4 p.m. on May 3.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The St. Lawrence County Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) awarded Massena’s Lisa Furnace with a scholarship to continue her education at SUNY Canton.</p>
<p>Furnace, a mother of six, earned an associate degree in accounting in May and is continuing this fall to earn a bachelor’s degree in legal studies.</p>

<p>In addition to her academic accomplishments, she is a volunteer firefighter and has helped raise funds for local Catholic schools. Furnace also served as a volunteer income tax assistance worker and is active in the Massena MOMs group, which provides assistance to mothers and families in the Massena community.</p>
<p>Furnace won the associate degree Outstanding Graduate Award at the College’s 2012 Commencement. She was a member of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society and made President’s List for earning a 3.75 of higher grade point average during each of her four semesters in the accounting program.</p>

<p>In addition to her award, she also was given a membership in AAUW.</p>
<p>SUNY Canton Interim President Carli C. Schiffner and SUNY Canton Director of Human Resources Betty Connolly are both AAUW St. Lawrence County Branch officers.</p>
<p>“Lisa is a deserving recipient of this award because of her commitment to excellence in her academic pursuits, as well as her volunteer work in the community,” Schiffner said. “Fellow students said Lisa is inspirational and always willing to help. Faculty said she takes charge of her education and values her experience at the College.&#8221;</p>
<p>AAUW is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that empowers women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research. AAUW has more than 150,000 members and supporters across the United States, as well as 1,000 local branches and 700 college and university partners. <p>SUNY Canton has received an award from the St. Lawrence County branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) for the 2009 Professional Clothing Fair.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">The AAUW announced that the college had won a second place award in the Community program division at recent statewide Convention in Bolton Landing.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal">The SUNY Canton office of Human Resources, the Office of Career Services, and the St. Lawrence County One-Stop career center collaborate to host an annual clothing drive and fair for individuals who are preparing to join or rejoin the workforce. More than 250 people benefitted from the fair, according to Betty Connolly, SUNY Canton Director of Human Resources and AAUW member.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal">“We have individuals donate gently used clothing and distribute it to jobseekers from the community,” she said. “It’s been a well-received event. This year, our services were especially appreciated due to the sluggish economy.”</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal">SUNY Canton offers a wide variety of career-driven bachelor&#8217;s, associate, and certificate programs, as well as three master&#8217;s degrees in conjunction with SUNYIT, Utica. Most of SUNY Canton&#8217;s new four-year programs are designed so students can take them on-campus, online, or both. SUNY Canton OnLine features more than 100 courses online each semester. The College&#8217;s athletic teams belong to the NAIA&#8217;s Sunrise Conference, enabling students to compete in their respective sports for four years.</p>
