John J. Gray Jr., CPA, founder and managing partner of Gray & Gray Certified Public Accountants in Canton, was recognized for his decades of public service and dedication to the area’s economic development.

“John Gray has worked tirelessly in the community to make Canton and the North Country a better place to live and work,” said SUNY Canton Interim President Carli C. Schiffner. “It is fitting that SUNY Canton is recognizing his many achievements and contributions with this award.”

Gray has helped develop long-range economic development goals for the village through his work on the Canton Economic Development Steering Committee. He also lends his financial expertise to the Canton Chamber of Commerce where he has served as treasurer since 2004.

“John has vast financial knowledge, which, over the years, he has shared generously with several volunteer organizations throughout the North Country.” said retired SUNY Canton Vice President for Administration Charles F. Goolden.

Gray has sponsored numerous exhibits with the Traditional Arts in Upstate New York (TAUNY), a not-for-profit folk arts organization in Canton, and he was instrumental in transforming an abandoned building in downtown Canton into professional office space and luxury condominiums.

In addition to his position as treasurer for the St. Lawrence Childcare Council, he serves on the Town of Colton Planning Board and was a member of the SUNY Canton Business Advisory Board. Gray is also actively involved in his church, where he donates his time to assist with events and acts as a consultant on financial matters.

“I feel honored and fortunate to know John Gray,” said the Rev. Raymond J. Moreau. “He is a person who has, and continues to be, involved with his church and community and has brought hope, spread joy and enlivened people — myself included.”

Gray received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Clarkson University. He and his wife, Christine, have four children and live in Colton.

Since 1976, the SUNY Canton College Council has given the Distinguished Citizen Award in recognition of exceptional and distinguished service to SUNY Canton, to the community, to the state or to the nation.

“Upon graduation, you will have opportunities to take risks,” SUNY Canton Interim President Carli C. Schiffner said to the 2013 graduating class. “Make new connections and consider moving from familiar surroundings and landscapes. This is an exciting beginning — go for it. Don’t be idle.”

This will be Schiffner’s final commencement at SUNY Canton. She will step down May 31 to become vice president of instruction at Wenatchee Valley College in Washington State. Joseph C. Hoffman will begin his tenure as SUNY Canton acting president June 1.

Student Government Association President Nafessa Johnson Addresses her classmates at SUNY Canton’s 105th Commencement Ceremony.

The senior class address was given by SUNY Canton’s Student Government Association President Nafeesa Johnson. She is graduating with a baccalaureate degree in Criminal Justice: Law Enforcement Leadership and is a representative for the agricultural and technical colleges on SUNY’s Student Assembly. She is also a member of the SUNY Canton College Council.

“The roads that we walk on are never easy, so we must pave the way for those who come after us,” Johnson said to her fellow classmates. “Many of us sit here as sons and daughters, mothers and fathers and veterans who have risked their lives for our great nation, but most of all we sit here today as graduates. Throughout my time at SUNY Canton many people have played a part in the person I am today.”

Johnson presented the annual Northstar Award to Assistant Professor Christa K. Kelson. This award is determined by the student body to recognize a faculty or staff member. Kelson teaches accounting and was selected for her kindness and helpfulness as a faculty member and adviser. She is an avid supporter of student activities and athletics.

• John Payne Jr., a Sports Management major from Manchester, N.H., who received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence and the Chancellor’s Scholar Athlete Award.
• Ashley A. Abeling, a Dental Hygiene major from Perth, who received the David R. Maynard Student Activities Award.

The top five bachelor’s degrees awarded, listed in order of popularity, were Criminal Investigation, Management, Finance, Nursing and Legal Studies.

The top five associate degrees with the most graduates were Criminal Justice, Nursing, Liberal Arts, Veterinary Science Technology and Business Administration.

Yesterday, the graduating students from SUNY Canton’s Nursing programs were recognized at pinning ceremonies. Nearly 100 students are graduating and becoming registered nurses or licensed practical nurses. Additionally, 28 cadets graduated from the David Sullivan – St. Lawrence County Law Enforcement Academy. Eight of the cadets were students from the Law Enforcement Leadership program who enrolled as part of their final semester of classes.

This is the 14^th time in 17 years that SUNY Canton’s ASCE student chapter has captured the regional title, and their win earns them a spot in the national intercollegiate contest to be held next month at the University of Washington in Seattle, where they will compete against some of the most prestigious schools in the country.

“The entire SUNY Canton community is extremely proud of the steel bridge team’s achievement at the regional competition,” said Interim President Carli C. Schiffner. “These talented students are outstanding ambassadors for our school, and we are thrilled that they will be representing SUNY Canton in Seattle next month.”

Co-sponsored by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), the contest challenges future engineers to display their skills in design, fabrication and teamwork by building a one-tenth scale model bridge to meet certain criteria, such as construction speed, lightness and economy. The team completed the construction in 5 minutes and 15 seconds and earned first place in the regional event’s speed subcategory. The team also placed in three other categories:

• Second place in lightness
• Second place in construction economy
• Third place in structural efficiency

“This year’s bridge is built with speed in mind,” said bridge designer and Civil and Environmental Technology major William W. Corbine III from Potsdam. “Our success relies on an efficient design and a cooperative team.”

The students began working on the bridge in February and have dedicated countless hours to fine-tuning their skills.

“The students gave up their spring break to prepare for competition,” said Paul D. Hitchman, an instructional support associate and faculty adviser for the team.

Hitchman and co-adviser Dennis E. Tuper help to raise the necessary funds needed to cover the travel and lodging expenses for the team, which are significantly higher than in year’s past due to the national competition’s location. “The coins are a unique fundraiser for the student-run club,” said SUNY Canton Interim President Carli C. Schiffner. “They use the proceeds for their charitable work here on campus and in the community.”

Challenge coins are typical given in the military to prove membership, award special achievement and enhance moral. Each challenge coin is molded and enameled with an image of both the SUNY Canton seal and the Kangaroo on reverse sides. Each coin costs $6 and the proceeds will be used to fund the Veterans Association’s various projects.

In the past academic year, the Veterans Association sponsored a hole at a charity golf tournament, donated more than 170 pounds of food to the Canton Church and Community Program and assisted with the Wounded Warrior Project’s sled hockey games.

Members of the group will also be planting a tree at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 25, on the south side of Nevaldine Technology Center, the day before Arbor Day.

The SUNY Canton’s Veterans Association was formed to connect students and alumni who serve or have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Their group association is open to veterans from all generations and branches of service.

“The students we honor have strong records of achievement as student leaders, scholar athletes, aspiring artists and community volunteers,” said SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher at the April 4^th awards ceremony in Albany. “By exhibiting excellence in class, on campus and in their local communities, these students truly represent the power of SUNY and we honor them with great pride.”

Zachary J. Smith, an Industrial Technology Management major from Lisbon, was a recipient of the Canino Scholar Award and the College’s Academic Award in recognition of holding the highest grade point average while he was in one of the College’s certificate programs.

Smith is also the bachelor’s-level Outstanding Graduate for the year and will be honored at SUNY Canton’s Commencement Ceremony.

“I will earn three degrees in eight semesters when I graduate in May,” Smith said. “To achieve this, I’ve taken large class loads during regular semesters and additional classes during Summer Session and Winterterm.”

Smith also designed, engineered, managed and led the building of a training facility and primary school in South Sudan in the spring of 2012 through a Christian organization. “My faculty adviser thought this project would fit well within my academic studies,” he added. “Upon graduation, I hope to return to Central Africa, employing the skills I’ve acquired at SUNY Canton to lead further humanitarian and development projects.”

He was the vice president of Campus Ministries Club, and won a certificate of appreciation from the Christian Fellowship Center in Madrid.

John Payne, a Sports Management major from Manchester, N.H., and originally from Port Moody, B.C., was the men’s ice hockey captain from 2011 to 2013, and was among the select few players to reach 100 goals during his SUNY Canton hockey career. He was vice president of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and a member of the Intercollegiate Athletics Board and the president of the Sports Management Student Association.

He received Academic All-American awards from three conferences and received the Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Award in 2012. He was the recipient of four scholarships through SUNY Canton foundation.

“John’s leadership skills extend beyond the ice and locker room,” said Matthew G. Metcalf, assistant athletic director. “He always volunteers and participates in community service projects in the local community.”

His volunteer work included community service projects as part of the Roos Give Back program, volunteering at the Grace Episcopal Church’s Friday Soup Kitchen meal and participating in the Reading Roos program at local elementary schools.

Payne is currently interning with the Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League.

The Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence was created in 1997 to recognize students who have best demonstrated, and have been recognized for, the integration of academic excellence with accomplishments in the areas of leadership, athletics, community service, creative and performing arts, campus involvement, or career achievement.

Each year, campus presidents establish a selection committee, which reviews exemplary students. Nominees are then forwarded to the Chancellor’s Office and are subject to a second round of review. Finalists are then recommended to the Chancellor to become recipients of the award. Each recipient receives a framed certificate and medallion, which is traditionally worn at commencement.

Panelists will share their personal stories about the impact of the women’s movement on the North Country at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 21, at SUNY Canton’s Southworth Library. Speakers will include: Ellen Rocco, station manager for North Country Public Radio; Karen St. Hilaire, St. Lawrence County administrator; and Veigh Mehan Lee, director of accommodative services at SUNY Canton.

“In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the social and political rhythms of the women’s movement were alive and well in the North Country, said SUNY Canton Interim President Carli C. Schiffner. “The activism and drive of these women led to many of the hallmarks of our community — Birdsfoot Farm, the Little River School, ReachOut and Renewal House. The synergy from these activists has forever left its influence on our community in northern New York, and many of these community leaders remain active.”

“We have many excellent nurses on staff who are graduates of SUNY Canton’s RN program,” noted Hospital President and CEO David B. Acker.  “As the nursing profession has advanced, new standards of care require advanced training.  SUNY Canton’s online graduate nursing program is a perfect fit for our staff, enabling them to pursue their degree while working.”

The first two scholarship recipients are Tammy Sykes, Nurse Manager in the Hospital’s Emergency Department; and TerriAnn Crump, nurse in inpatient Chemical Dependency Rehab. Both nurses received their RN training at SUNY Canton.

With the Canton College Foundation’s commitment, gifts, grants and pledges to the Hospital Foundation’s “Constructing Healthier Communities” campaign have topped $3 million.  “We are gratified that we found such meaningful way to be a part of the Hospital’s campaign,” noted SUNY Canton Vice President for Advancement David Gerlach.  “This is just one more example of how our two institutions can partner creatively.”
