University Police Civil Service Exam Application Deadline set for Oct. 13

The State University of New York Police Department is looking for officers, and the closing date for applicants is rapidly approaching.

“There are several upcoming Civil Service entrance examinations for University Police Officers around the state, but those interested need to apply by Oct. 13,” said SUNY Canton University Police Deputy Chief Steven L. Livernois. “Applicants need to take this test as their first step toward a new and rewarding career.”

There are approximately 500 officers stationed at about 28 colleges and universities across the state. “This career allows officers to go anywhere, or work near their hometown,” Livernois said.

SUNY University Police Officers are part of the educational process at each of their respective colleges. They speak on a variety of topics related to overall safety and teach life-saving classes in first aid. They develop and maintain a positive relationship with students, faculty and staff in order to continue the overall safety and wellbeing of the each entire campus community.

SUNY Canton is also home to the David Sullivan – St. Lawrence County Law Enforcement Academy, which offers the New York State basic course and the pre-employment basic course for police “Someone from the area can start here, finish here, and stay here, if they so desire,” Livernois said.

The next Civil Service Examinations will be held on Nov. 15. SUNY Canton offers a wide variety of career-driven bachelor’s, associate, and certificate programs. Most of SUNY Canton’s new four-year programs are designed so students can take them on-campus, online, or both. SUNY Canton OnLine features more than 100 courses online each semester. The College’s athletic teams belong to the NAIA’s Sunrise Conference, enabling students to compete in their respective sports for four years. Construction is now underway for the College’s new Convocation, Athletic, and Recreation Center.
