CHECK PRESENTATION – The SUNY Canton First Year Experience (FYE) program raised more than $4,800 for the Canton Volunteer Fire Department during their eight-hour relay on Sept. 27. The college has hosted the student-staffed relay fundraiser for four years and has annually contributed all donations to charitable life-saving organizations. Pictured are Chris Marquart, Men’s Cross Country Coach and Assistant Director of Residence Life presenting a check from donations received from the event to Canton Volunteer Firefighter Michael Morgan while First Year Experience students applaud.

SUNY Canton offers a wide variety of career-driven bachelor’s, associate, and certificate programs, as well as three master’s degrees in conjunction with SUNYIT, Utica. Most of SUNY Canton’s new four-year programs are designed so students can take them on-campus, online, or both. SUNY Canton OnLine features more than 100 courses online each semester. The college’s athletic teams belong to the NAIA’s Sunrise Conference, enabling students to compete in their respective sports for four years.

History will unfold this Saturday when the SUNY Canton men’s and women’s cross country teams compete at the SUNYIT Invitational in Utica. The competition will mark the first four-year athletic event in the college’s storied history.

The Kangaroos completed the transition from a two-year athletic program to a four-year athletic program this past year when they joined the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). SUNY Canton will compete in the Sunrise Conference which includes teams from New York, Vermont, Maine and Massachusetts.

This weekend’s invitational will also mark the first meet for the men’s and women’s cross country teams who are in their first year of competition.

“This is a very exciting time for all of us,” said Cross Country Head Coach Chris Marquart. “It’s quite an honor to be the first SUNY Canton team to compete at the four-year level. Both teams have been working extremely hard during the past few weeks and we can’t wait to go out and race this weekend.”

Women’s and men’s soccer will begin their season on Sept. 8 when they host SUNY Potsdam and Paul Smith’s College respectively and women’s volleyball has their first match on September 16 against Vermont Technical College.

A new all-weather, lighted synthetic turf field for soccer is scheduled for completion this fall. The college also did extensive renovations on the cross country trails that run behind the campus through the wood along the Grasse River. In addition, a new on-campus baseball field was built and SUNY Canton will soon begin construction on a new $18 million athletic and convocation center.
