SUNY Canton to Host Dining and Health Awareness Showcase Sept. 18

Monday, September 16th, 2013

The SUNY Canton College Association Dining Services Inc. and Davis Health Center will hold an event to promote healthy lifestyles from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, in Chaney Dining Center.

The showcase will put diners in touch with the people responsible for growing or producing the raw ingredients of some of the dining options on campus. Most menu items served during the event will be grown, purchased or produced in the North Country.

There will also be a mini health fair where Physical Therapy students will be performing mini massages, Nursing students will be testing blood pressure, and Claxton Hepburn Medical Center will be holding blood sugar and cholesterol screenings. A registered dietician will also be on hand to discuss nutrition.

“We are holding this event to educate our students on where and why we purchase locally grown foods,” Assistant Dining Center Manager Jason Bartholomew said. “It provides a fantastic opportunity for our growers to explain what goes into producing their food items.”

The cost for the public is $10.00 per person at this special event. Regular charges will apply for students, and they can use their meal plans to participate.

“Jreck’s is not new to SUNY Canton,” Kennedy said, noting the restaurant has been on campus for 10 years. “While we’re proud to feature these new nationally-recognized eateries at the College, we’re just as proud to have a company whose roots began just miles from here. We are the only college in the area to have a local restaurant business on campus. Having Jreck’s illustrates our unwavering commitment to the continued success of North Country local businesses.”

Hours for the three eateries are:
