SUNY Canton recently honored a member of the College’s Physical Plant staff for her positive demeanor and attentiveness to the needs of her office and the College community.

Tammy L. Carr is the 2011 recipient of the SUNY Canton College Council’s Employee Recognition Award, which recognizes a member of the classified staff who demonstrates exceptional service and effectiveness in performance.

“Tammy is willing to do anything no matter the situation she faces,” said SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy. “She will take on extra work to ensure everything gets done and does so with a smile. The entire campus community enjoys working with her because of her positive attitude and outlook.”

Carr graduated from SUNY Canton in 1987 with her associate degree in secretarial science. She began working in the Physical Plant soon after as a Stenographer and was promoted to Keyboard Specialist 2 in December 1996. In 2003, Carr was promoted her current position as Secretary 1.

“Tammy has developed into the main hub in the everyday operation of the Physical Plant in its relationship with the rest of the campus,” said Randall W. Teele, general mechanic and colleague.

Associate Facilities Program Coordinator Bruce F. Alexander echoed Teele’s sentiments. “Tammy is the ‘critical link’ between the campus and the physical plant staff office and she is willing to wear whatever hat is needed to make sure that the critical needs of students, faculty and staff are met. Her 24 years of service at SUNY Canton has given her a broad base of experience in the daily operations of the campus that she uses to provide practical solutions to problems and ensure quality services to the campus community.”

Carr is the 16th recipient of the award. She was recognized during the College’s Recognition Day on Thursday, May 26. She lives in Lisbon with her husband, Rick, and son, Andrew. Her daughter Amanda and granddaughter Alexia live in Norfolk.

From a relatively small space in the corner of the Southworth Library, Vicki LaVoie Rogers makes a big impact that reverberates all the way through the SUNY Canton campus on a daily basis. Throughout her career at the College, she has made people smile.

Rogers, a retail food associate at the College, was recognized for her exemplary service to others with the 2010 SUNY Canton Employee Recognition Award. She is well known by nearly everyone on campus for her welcoming demeanor and helpful attitude while working at the Cyber Café, the library hotspot for Starbucks coffee and friendly conversations.

“In a year when our College placed a big spotlight on our service to students and each other, Vicki seemed to shine the brightest,” said SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy. “Sometimes unknowingly, she specializes in customer service. If you’ve ever had a smile change your day, then you can relate to what Vicki brings to the life of our campus.”

Rogers has worked in food service since she began in 1999. She served as a supervisor at Chaney Dining Center and began working at the Cyber Café when it opened in 2004. In addition to her work at the Café, she does many catering events and is often one of the first people to jump in and offer to help.

“I have seen her be a confidante to our students and a booster of spirits. She lights up the Cyber Café and her personality has set the mood for the great attraction the Café has become on our campus,” said Associate Director of Advancement Julie Parkman. “I have worked with Vicki now at many events, including the Honors Convocation Celebration dinners, Scholarship Luncheons, and other major Foundation functions like Alumni weekend. Her first priority is always helping to make the event an outstanding experience for guests. “

For many, Rogers has become much more than just a friendly face to greet you in the morning. “Vicki not only provides excellent customer service to meet their needs, but also serves as a goodwill ambassador,” said Molly Mott, Dean of Academic Services and Retention. “Her role in creating a welcoming environment for all who come cannot be overstated or emphasized enough.’”

Rogers is the 15th recipient of the SUNY Canton College Council’s annual award. She received the award during the College’s Recognition Day on Friday, May 28.

“Randy is one of the people who work diligently behind the scenes to ensure the smooth running of the College,” said President Joseph L. Kennedy. “His dedication over the years and his daily attention to detail enable us to provide students with a safe, friendly environment to learn and succeed.”

Teele began working at the college more than 25 years ago on the College’s farm and later joined the maintenance staff at the college. In addition to his duties as locksmith, he also helps out with carpentry and mechanical maintenance.

“Randy’s duty of being the locksmith on campus is an enormous responsibility,” said Building Trades Supervisor Dave Mills. “He is responsible for thousands of keys on campus, all of the card access system keys, and all dorm room combination locks.”

Teele has also been involved in the North Country community. He has served as a member of the Lisbon Town and Recreation Boards. He is a marching band booster, he is a former elementary school volunteer basketball coach, and is active in his church.

“Randy can always be counted on when called upon. He receives calls in the middle of the night, weekends and holidays to return to campus to help keep it secure,” said Chief of University Police William F. Mason.

Teele graduated from SUNY Canton in 1981 with a degree in Animal Husbandry, a precursor to the Veterinary Science Technology program. He graduated again in 1982 with a one-year certificate in Electrical Construction and Maintenance. He earned his Journeyman General Mechanic certification while working at the college.

SUNY Canton offers a wide variety of career-driven bachelor’s, associate, and certificate programs, as well as three master’s degrees in conjunction with SUNYIT, Utica. Most of SUNY Canton’s new four-year programs are designed so students can take them on-campus, online, or both. SUNY Canton OnLine features more than 100 courses online each semester. The college’s athletic teams belong to the NAIA’s Sunrise Conference, enabling students to compete in their respective sports for four years.

Grounds Supervisor Stanley Wilson received the 2007 Employee Recognition Award presented by the SUNY Canton College Council.

Wilson is a “hands-on” leader who takes pride in his job and the appearance of SUNY Canton.

Wilson oversees the mowing, cuts, pruning, planting, trimming, plowing, and sanding on campus. Under his supervision, the college is not only kept safe, but also beautiful.

“Stan is quick to point out that his staff deserves credit for the campus’ appearance,” said SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy. “He isn’t afraid to roll up his sleeves and work hard right along with them.”

Wilson started in 1984 as a cleaner and was promoted to janitor in 1988, transferred to grounds in 1990, was a highway equipment operator in 1994, and senior grounds worker in 2000, and has been in his current position in 2002.

He recently played a key role in ensuring the success of events such as the Regan Flag Station dedication and the college’s outdoor commencement ceremony.
